Tin-Top Recomendations

The time has come to look at buying a regular (boring!) run around car.....i need something that can handle motorways with out too much hassle but be cheap and economical. So far on my top list are:
- newish VW Golf 1.6 FSI
- older peugeot 306 TD
mmmmm thats it. I reckon if I get something less than 3 yrs old I can afford about £10,500 on loans (yuck!)...but I'm open to sugestions of cheaper secondhand cars. I don't mind doing work them but its gonna be my only car apart from 7 and have to get to work! Anybody got any other suggestions of things I should be looking at??? Cheers Oli.

How about a tdci focus, 5k - 6k will get you a decent one and they are fun to drive too?

Cheers

mk3 cavalier, 1.6spi.

mines given no real bother over the last 2 years, and apart from a back box and a head gasket, (£35 parts) it runs flawlessly, is reasonably economical, and for about £300, it leaves plenty of beer money out of your £10,500. put that money towards a deposit for a house!

it might not be pretty, or cool, but it's fun hooning about trying to get all you can out of something that has so little to offer.

or for that luxury edge, get a 95plate 2.0 cdx for about £700.

i assume cos you're willing to throw away loans on depreciation, bangernomics isn't your thing, but as long as you're not turning up to meet clients in said banger, (or out on the pull) i see no reason to throw money into a pit. iirc, zil ran a mazda 626 for a while. maybe that should be one to have a look at.

just another side to consider
tom

had a 306 td would recommend it for cheap running and high miles. I now have a 1.9tdi vw bora, basically the same as an octavia and just as cheap to buy. A high milage example bought from Chris Gamlin on here now clocked 139k with no problems whatsoever, far superior car than the 306 aswell and plan to run it til it dies so the depreciation will pay for itself in the milage and years of reliable service I expect to get from it.
basically any vw/audi/skoda/seat diesel would get the thumbs up from me!

Why be boring, when for 4k, you could be driving an Alfa 156 JTD, around 2002 vintage - you'll never look back!

you big wimp!!!

Worrying about reliability when you have a seven as well!

I plan to use the seven for everyday commuting as long as it doesn't look to dodgy weather-wise.

once its on the road the XR4x4 will be going and replaced with a nice economical 4.0 Jag XJ40 as the new tow car, ones that don't need too much welding are only £500 now!

Retro RWD is the way forward...........automotive fabrication, car restoration, sheetmetal work, engine conversion retro car restoration and tuning

Why did I know I'd get some of those suggestions!?
- I live in Aberdeen so commuting in the 7 is LESS than ideal, especially in the two foot of snow we regularly get for a bout a week every year!
- Would love the audi but think my insurers would have a heartache - same for the Jag and the Alfa
- I don't mind bangers too much, we've got an old landy that used to be our reliable commuter. I just need something that will get me to work and back 5 times a week. Don't mind servicing and doing the odd bit of work but can't afford to be taking days off to replace headgaskets!
I can't convince myself whether I'm better off buying the 2 year old golf (and then regret the loan but love the car) and run it into the ground) or buy a banger and hope for the best......might speak to Phil again and go buy one at auction....Oli.

Did you know the FSI golf has a nice little sticker inside the fuel filler cap that says 98RON?

Your fillups will cost the same as a diesel with none of the benefits in MPG.

I'd go for a tdci focus. I had one as a company car, did 45k in it in the first year and only needed servicing twice. Pokey little engine, great chassis, very comfortable and a hoot to drive (for a tintop)

Why wouldn't you have one out of interest? Badge snobbery or bad experience?

Focus

I would go for the Focus idea myself (well, I did go for the Focus idea)....
When we were looking we picked up a 1 yr old, 14k mile, 1.6 Zetec for £7.5k at a dealer. Car was UK so still had 2 yrs warranty and so far has been great with an extra 30k miles on the clock in the last 1 1/2 years.
The only thing to go wrong was the water pump exploding after a day going from Prague to Leeds (autobahns). It was covered under warranty so no big deal.
