is quattro and 4motion the same?
Was jsut wondering last night whilst browsing the audi website whether the 4motion vw system as used on golf's and passat's was the same
system as used on the a3 and a4 and badged by audi as quattro?
I know that they're all vwaudi group and that most of the running gear is shared platform just wondered if it was also the case for the 4wd.

i'd hazard a guess that it is. The Audi TT chassis was the same as the golfs (so we are lead to beleive) I would assume that the Golf 4 Motion
inherited the TT's quattro system................or was it the other way round? mmm.

Everything is the same with Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda!
Might as well get the 4x4 Skoda Octavia - it's essentially a TT underneath, is cheaper, less poncy and has more load space

Audi A4 not the same...
My A4 Tdi has a longitudinal engine and can be had with Quattro, whereas the Golf 4-motion is transverse so I assume that the gearbox and 4WD setup
will be totally different.

The quattro system is a full torsen setup whereas the 4motion uses a haldex hydraulic diff to transfer power to the rear wheels.
The a3/tt/4motion aren't full time 4wd, they primarily pump power to the wrong, sorry, front wheels. If the front wheels slip then power is
transfered towards the rear.
edited to add, any of the current transverse engine will have the haldex system whereas the longditudal will have quattro.

so do all a4's have longitudional engines?
and are all a3's transverse?
does this ring true for any vw equivalents engine spec wise? ie:
a3 - golf
a4 - passat
A bit of time and googling I think I've answered my question:

Good example of badge in-breeding this!
The bigger cars, i.e. a4 upwards use the quattro platform - so a passat 4-motion is indeed a quattro in disguise. The smaller models all use the
4-motion/synchro platform - thats A3, tt, golf, octavia all transverse and no proper quattro gubbins.

Ahem - for Quatttro 4motion translation keep reading. :-)
4motion Passat (B5.5) had the longitudinal engine and hence proper Quattro IV (in Audi speak). So, proper full time 4WD. Just like the A4, A6 and
A8
Any transverse engined car - regardless of what it says on the back - has a haldex clutch, so part time 4WD.
So, if you want proper Quattro or 4motion, you need a north/south engine.
None of this nancy boy transverse nonsense.

I've heard this before but always argued against it..
octavia and bora (now jetta again), (do they still make toldeo's?) = booted golf
a3, beetle, tt , leon = golf
superb = a6
phaeton = a8
I always thought an a4 was bigger than the octavia/bora as it's bigger than a booted a3?
hence I thought a4 was equivalent size to passat rather than the passat being a6 sized?!
And do all audi a4's have longitudional engines? even the 4-pots?
cheers,
Ned.

Correct, although they use common engines between different makes models, ie, the passat, has an inline 4 as per the audo, but the octavia has a
transverse 4 as per the golf - of course this is based on my experience of about one of each.

Just to nit pick, the Octavia is not booted, it's a hatchback (a very spacious one as well).

True enough, my dad's got one, put my bora side by side with it and you can see it's the same car. I always assumed the bora was a hatch
because of this - until i bought one! The octavia's hatch makes it very flexible load space.

ok my 2 pence not that its worth anything my gut feeling is that things are tested on the seat and skoda and when the buggs are ironed out they are
mved on given very minor twaeks and released as the VW and Audi brand.
I do know that the leon and the a3 were the same
