AA Membership discount

Just been on the phone to AA and found out something which I think is worth pasing on......................

We have been members for years with only very light use of their services as our cars heave been more modern / reliable than they were 20 years ago as hard up students.
Recent quote for their services was about £250 for 2 cars and a whole pile of services, having a look through we found a few items we felt weren't worthwhile so I phoned up to change them and after the usual queuing and talking to different people I got through to the relevant department who asked several times if I was sure I wished to give up the valuable blah blah
Eventually I reaffirmed that I did wish to lose the service which knocked off £65, then totally unprompted the woman offered me a 30% discount as I was a long serving member!!, which effectively halved the original quote and keeps all of the vital bits.

Moral of the story :
If you are an AA member get on the phone, tell them you have a cheaper / better quote/ are tired of paying high rates/ feel like some discount etc
Any money saved can be used to service your Locost to make it more reliable so you don't have to phone the AA............ ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ps I would be quite interested to hear how others fare with this one

If that happened to me, I would leave the AA just on principle (if I could get the same/similar service elsewhere). If you really were a valued member/customer, you should have been offered the 30% discount at policy renewal, NOT when you phoned them up to challenge them.

Having said that, it seems to be common practice for insurance companies and the like to try and fleece you out of as much as they think they can get away with, at renewal time.

That is why I always make a point to ring round for prices on all my insurance policies, a month or two before renewal. Robbing bastards the lot of em.....

Phil

I am an AA member and have always had the basic service which cost me £66 in March 2006 to cover myself and my wife. Since I have been with them for a while they keep upgrading my service to higher and higher levels for the same price. I have never asked them to do this or threatened to leave. I now get covered for everything, including home start for just £66/ann. This makes it pretty tough to find a viable alternative at the same price.

Cheers,
Craig.

And NTL do the same thing, some good discounts to be had if you phone up to say you are leaving.

My farther (whos yorshire through and through) renewed and mentioned he was going to go rac so they matched it, then they offered him the long service discount, then myself and my brothers were up for renewal, at 60-80 a go so we upgraded his to a family membership 28 quid extra, split between us two made a very cheap membership. He then to our embaressment began to haggel on the phone and they reduced it another 18 quid, I couldn't believe that such a large company would drop prices so quickly and even haggel!

Think it was £110 from the AA for the level of cover below home-start for me and my dad, after we'd previously been with the RAC but their renewal price was crazy.

Not heard the full story yet but were not very happy with their service so far.

Dad pulled into the services with a broken power steering pump belt,

"we'll send somebody out to recover you"

Well hang on a minute I don't need recovering i'm in a safe place, can't you just change the belt or fit an emergency split link one?

"there's now that many different belts we don't carry them" or word to that effect!

*isin't that what the Halfords on the way here is for then*

I presume after the 2-3 hour wait the belt wa finally changed, will know later

My story.
My wifes grandfather had just renewed his membership, then dies. AA wouldn't refund his widow the money, but said a family member can carry on the membership for no additional charge, so as i was a poor student at the time, running a not too reliable car, i took on the membership. My card reads 'member since 1974. Not bad since i was only born in 75!.

Anyway, a few years ago i break down. Ring AA, first person tells me they can't help as i am deceased! I explain the full story, then put on hold. After 30 minutes on hold i hang up, ring again. Get the same story from someone else. But your recorded here as deceased.

After they finaly send a patrol out i am on my way.

Fast forward about a year and i break down again and yet one more time i am told of my own sad passing. A quick confirmation that i'm not and a patrol comes to my resuce.

I have not used them for a call out since, and touch wood, i hope i don't have to explain all that again.

And they do keep upgrading my account every year for free as i am such as long standing customer.

The first and only time I tried to use the AA they wouldn't recover me! We're fully paid up on the top whack (apart from home-start) service. Got to SVA and the engine blew up....phoned AA - sorry your not road legal. Even the SVA man was so annoyed he got on the phone and shouted at them a bit....cost me £95 in the end to get recovered 18 miles to home! Crazy....Oli.

Try it with Sky TV too - I'm on 12 months half price for sky plus and multi room (about £20 a month for the next year).

You can bet when the 12 months is up, I'll ring up to 'cancel' my sky subscription, and will be trying for another 6 months half price with free broadband thrown in!

Just shows how much we get ripped off if they can afford this sort of discount so easily!

Found out a bit more now... after 3 hours the belt was finally changed by the AA.

Somebody was there within an hour but that was only a recovery truck after my dad had told them he wanted it fixing not recovering when he originally rang.

Thats the second time now with breakdown services that they've blatantly ignored asking to be either recovered or repaired.

Last time they wanted to send somebody out to fix the kit car
"well how do you know it needs recovering sir"

"well i'm stood here with a wheel arch in 1 hand and a sheared braided brake hose in the other"

"it'll be 2 hours for a recovery truck"

God give me strength!
