Which laptop?
Its my mum’s birthday in a weeks time and for it we want to get her laptop. I know desktops are better but she will use it all about the house and we
haven’t got space for a second computer. We have about 400 ish quid to spend on it, so which laptop is the best for money and where can we get it from
(we live in stoke)?
Also once we get it, what bits do I need to make the house wireless for the internet (cable broadband), to share documents on the main computer and
also to share the printer and scanner?

Speaking as someone who used to build computers for a living, Dell computers have some stunning deals on at the moment. Their quality in the early
days was a little variable but now days they are damn good.

I'm sure the computers are OK but when you are adding up the price to compare with other sources, you have to add extra to get even a
year's warranty - I think Dell's standard is 3 months. I did this comparison around New Year for my wife who started an Open University
degree course and ended up buying an Acer laptop for about £400 - not the smallest or lightest, but it seemed to have the best combination of hard
disk size, memory and spec for the price. I ended up buying a bit of extra RAM from Crucial Technology www.crucial.com/uk
Whatver you do get, unless it's already included, don't go out and buy a full-price copy of Microsoft Office. If your mother is a student

I went for an Acer laptop about 3 years ago.
I think you can get them for around £390 ish or so. Do a Google for Acer laptop, for suppliers and prices. 
It has been brilliant, never given me any problems. Very pleased with it....

For Price and service dell are great, though as an enthusiast ide be going with Toshiba! if you will do second hand ide say dell

Got an apple ibook.....not great value for money I'll admit as you pay a premium for the design.....but.....its the only computer I've
ever experienced that doesn't crash, has never broken, never needed reloaded, doesn't need virus, adware, spyware etc software as none of
the little toe-rags have bothered to make them for apples yet.....plus its much, much faster than any PC's I've ever used.....also
they're a doddle to connect wirelessly etc as there are NO drivers on Mac's you really do plug and play.....Something to think about

Ill agree they are rare but the first one came out last year and more have been appearing, the problem your gonna have is that there are viruses about
but no software to protect you

If you go dell and spec the machine on line you can un select the waranty and it will cut the cost further, I did so and the price came down by £90.
I did get a call from Dell after asking why I did not want the special waranty...

How long was the warenty for, i did hear a little known fact that apparently electrical good have a warenty of 5 years by default. its in your
statutory rights from when electrical things frist came out but good luck getting ur money back after 4 years!

There are loads of virus scanners that do work for macs.... Norton do one though I would steer clear! Best I've found is a program called
ClamXav - freeware but works very welll.....never found any virus's on my computer though and I download from limewire all the time....Oli.
