i need a practical non boring car for upto 4k
what is there out there?
nothing at all is inspiring me, always been a ford man but i'm not ready to become a mondeo driver and the focus doesn't do it for me.
currently work for a renault agent so definately don't fancy anything french!
i'm looking for something, reliable, nippy, 30+mpg, prefer a 3dr but needs enough room for rear passengers, isn't going to make me feel
like throwing myself under it's wheels after a couple of hours on the motorway.
cars i've considered are:
escort mk6 RS2000 - positives are i miss my old one, they're quick enough and have enough room. negatives being they are at least 10 years old
now finding a nice one is a mission and a half!
golf MK4 gti (1.8T?) don't know a great deal about them but any golfs i've known in the past have gone on for ever. everything in my price
range has pretty high miles?
seat leon......same as above really.
any recomendations please?
built a car, built a home, had a family. lost the family, lost the home, still got the car.

When i was recently in the SEAT garage i enquired to the value of my car.
X reg 86k Leon Cupra 1.8T(180bhp std) in resonable nick apart from a dint in the front wing - £3200 trade in
Presumalby you can pick one up for 4kish Wreg perhaps?.
problems ive had with it are the drivers side front coil spring snapped!, a new lamda sensor, gearbox oil seal, passenger door needed a new window
motor, a track rod needed replacement and a coil pack needed replacing.
all in all im reasonably happy with it.

Camaro...you never know you might get 30mpg from it if you drive everywhere at tickover!
On a serious note; how about a honda prelude if you want something reasonably nippy. My only other suggestion would be an older st170 focus...

You can't beat a VW Corrado. Note only 2 passengers in the back tho. That's the only reason I don't have one. You'll get a
late, top of the range car for that sort of money.

thanks for all the input so far folks.
pug 306 gti-6........great drivers but the styling of the car does nothing for me.
prelude - shed loads of imports around and that worries me a bit plus they all seem to be high miles and i'm not familiar with the v-tec
engines.
corrado - beautiful motor, had a look around for one a couple of years back when i bought my cossie and then there was very few un-thrashed cars
around plus the insurance is quite high on them.
alfa 156 v6 - beautiful styling but i've heard too many nightmare stories about them plus the specs state 24mpg and thats with no doubt
conservative driving!

Have a hunt through the Saabs on offer at that price- go like the clappers on the open road loads of space well built - starship miles realistically
achievable and low hassle, just got back from a 430 mile trip carrying an engine and gearbox as well asme and the lad and it has done just over 30
mpg
mine has 125 k from new and other family members have knocked up 175 and 150 k before letting them go, depreciation on that sort of mileage is
negligible!

Don't worry about imports, they are much higher spec than the uk versions. I bought my wife an old M plate prelude a few years ago. 2.2 vtec, it
was a lovely drive, comfortable, economical but enough poke for a bit of fun. The vtec engine is pretty bullet proof as long as you look after it.
There's not alot of room in the back though

145 Cloverleaf (cheap and reasonably new, later shape one as per http://cgi1.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260053832195
That should go for under £1500 easily.
Last of the nicer shape Vectra's

Definitely agree re the Alfa 156 - but not with the above comment.
If you get one with full history, get the cam belt and tensioner changed as part of the sale regardless of when it was last done, and check the oil on
a weekly basis- you'll have the drive of your life!
7k rev limit - used most days.
I certainly don't regret it after 5 months!
