Help__ Student Work Experience (Engineer)

Hi,
Im a engineering student from Ireland with a passion for motorsport and i need to find work placement for next summer. There are no motorsport companies big enough in Ireland to take me on so im now looking in England. If anyone here could help i would be very grateful. I have a civic sprint car and im obsessed with the performance of lightweight single seaters and its in this area im looking for work.

Thanks.

Have a look in the autosport.co.uk business directory and send a letter and CV to as many companies as possibles. Also email them with your CV and a covering email detailing why you want the placement, about your course and interests.

If you have a careers advisor at uni go and see them with your CV and get some advice, alot of CVs dont get looked at if they dont look up to scratch. If you are applying to F1 teams they will probably receive over 1000 applications.

I sent applications to over 30 companies and got 2 interviews, and eventually got a Job at Nissan Technical Centre. Wasnt the best placement, but made me realise I dont want to get into production cars, despite the good wage and easy working hours. Not yet anyway!

Be persistant and be prepared to get knocked back. Some people get 10 interviews some people get none. One lad had 7 and got knocked back from all the interviews except the last!

Get them off asap, then send them again in a couple of months time if you dont get many positive responces. You have to chase up HR departments, Goodrich and Nissan were terrible, I was waiting to hear back from both, eventually Nissan got back to me first, a couple of months after telling me I had an interview.

Also they will recruit till the last minute, my old housemate got his job at BMW Mini a week before freshers week! Suddenly the old placement leaves and they realise they can't spread the work load over the department. When I left, my boss was told she could replace me and the other placement. They had to share the work of 2 people over the 3 remaining in our section, they were fuming as we probably did more work than them!

Good luck!

Edit: Sorry, just re read your post and realised you were looking for work just for the summer. If your looking for work for a single seater team, you are best going for a big team that run lots of cars in different championships. Smaller teams wont be able to pay someone to help out just for the summer usually. Im guessing you will need paying if coming over from Ireland!

A mate who works with me at Palmer Audi also words for a FF team near Manchester, they are a big team with good links. Will find out the name as I guess they arnt too far from you, relatively speaking! He has been doing a bit for Spyker F1 too through them.

Cheers for the advice, i have resorted to ringing companies, such as Pilbeam and Radical, just to get a reply. They seem intrested buy its hard to get a straight answer.

I have had more satisfaction with smaller companies so far but i would need to paid, at least enough to cover rent and living expenses.

Its a lot harder trying to find work in another country but im determined not to end up in a local company measuring pipes in quality control - like most of my class mates will end up doing.

Will keep the progress posted.

Joe
