Central Heating Help

Anyone got knowledge of how central heating systems are plumbed and wired?

We've just had an unvented system put in and it doesn't work properly. Initially we couldn't get any hot water.
As the firm are really crap and failed to come out I had a look and the 'HW off' connection from the controller to the mid position valve was permanently live, telling the mid position valve to block water from flowing into the tank.

I rewired this to the HW off connection from the programmer and we now have hot water and heating but when both HW and CH are on, the thermostat on the tank switches both systems off when the stat gets up to temperature.

When CH only is on the stat has no effect on the HW.

Having done a bit of research into what we have, it seems a hybrid between 'S' and 'Y' plan systems have been put in, and I think this is causing the problem.

We have a mid position valve where you would expect it to be and a zone valve on the return from the tank [Ariston ST210].

Should it be possible to make the system I have described work properly, or does it need to be replumbed?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Stu
