Shipwreck devon

Well after seeing the pictures in the paper and watching the news I decided to go get myself a new bmw ...lol at 10:30 this mornin i begged the boss to let me go and have a look after a hour and a half in the car we had to walk 3 miles to get to the beach because of road blocks once we were there we had to drop down a 10 foot wall to dodge the police fence and marched along the beach. i have never seen anything like it in all my life i felt like a right gippo until i saw bussiness men in suits routing about in broken glass and carryin master cylinders by the dozen down the beach.
The only thing i wanted was impossible to move the was a massive container full of brand new bmw engines still boxed. as for the gearboxes there was loads of people with wheel barrows taking them down the beach. all i came away with was a bit of door trim with m3 logo on it just to proove i had been there. i think i have walked 20 miles today (i hurt).

maritine law says finders keepers you have to register what you have found with in 28 days and the owner can claim it back but... 9 times out of ten they get there insurance money for it and are not bothered about the trashed goods. a container washed up full of new bmw motorbikes £6500 each people were riding them off the beach and past police but they are powerless to stop you because of the maritine law and 200 containers and fell over board so far 40 ish washed up but there is still 2200 on the ship and they think they are all going in so who knows what goin to be in the water in te next couple of weeks

I can see a return to the good ole days of piracy - see a container ship coming up the channel, put a couple of holes in it, shove it towards the beach, and a free for all.

I've got me a 1,000,000 candle power lamp and a computer chair, I want an assistant to spin me round and we're set up. Anybody in the know when they're bringing some bikes in worth having, I don't fancy a BMW.

Google says :- Did you mean: maritime law

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

If you take something that doesn't belong to you, with the intention of permanently depriving the owner of it, that's theft.

Rebelrider is right in the case of shipwrecks - you have to register the goods with the Receiver of Wrecks, who notifies the owner, who then has the options of coming and getting the goods back (but often don't). According to the paper yesterday, this only applies to shipwrecks - if you took stuff from an overturned lorry, for example, it's theft.

Also if you take something and with the intent of keeping it and/or don't notify the authorities about what you have taken it is theft...

<rant>
personally I think it is deplorable. - what people are forgetting is that someone has to pay for all these stolen goods. If it is an insurance company then we all end up paying in next years premiums.

People are also forgetting that some of the 'goods' on that ship were personal belongings, There was a story yesterday about a couple (I think from sweden) who watched on telly as someone went through their personal container throwing family photos in the sea because they were worthless.........

What about that small business round the corner from you who is now going to go bust because they lost a shipment of motorbikes?
(remeber the insurance will probably not pay out for a VERY long time.....)

Its a ridiculous situation and should never have been allowed to happen.

</Rant>

Anarchy

I saw the pictures on the news, and i must admit it reminds me a bit of the looting in New Orleans.

I realise the law may allow collection and recovery of the goods but it does seem to be just a bit much when people are driving hundreds of miles to take advantage of the situation.

Im not trying to be judgmental and picking up the odd momento is one thing but rummaging through a private transport container or driving a new BMW off the beach seems a bit much.

When ever there is a loophole in the law, peoples own moral standards seem to go out the window. If that was a ship from company like DHL, would people rip open the goods addressed to someone else and take them for their own?

I think people feel there is no "victim" in this situation and this gives them the right to take all they can.
How many of them will take goods only for themseves or will they sell them on to make money.

I know I'm being a bit pious and im right up on top of the "high horse" but there you go

Also I'm about 600 miles away so no chance of getting to the beach.

Hi,

I only live about 15 miles from the beach where this happened, but haven't even been to look. I might take the kids down to see the ship at the weekend though.

Some of the tales i've heard from people who have been are a bit scary!. People climbing into half submurged containers with waves crashing over the top to recover nintendo Wii's that have been floating in the water and have got no english writing on, so may not even work in this country! And some up to chest high in the water removing the alloy wheels from an up turned frontera.
How some one hasn't died trying to recover something I don't know

Wow, I’m kind of surprised that the police aren’t there then. They’ll get well criticised if someone is killed…

They can't do anything. You can't stop some one climbing into the sea, since what they're doing isn't illegal. It may be stupid, but not illegal. That's why they're trying to stop people getting to the beach.

It's sad how people degenerate into grabbing, thieving pikeys in these situations, desperate to get their hands on whatever they can

BTW, since an official receiver has been nominated it is illegal to remove any goods without registering any items with the authorities, and they have to surrender the items is asked within 28 days.

What i dont get is the fact the police couldnt do anything when peeps were riding off with brand new motorbikes??? so they had a bike on the public highway without tax, mot or even been registered?

i think the reporting is not too accurate
