couple of Q's regarding tintop laws

1. With a car thats failed or doesnt have an mot... can you drive to an mot test?

2. How far away can that test be?

3. Can you get a car taxed without an mot?

cheers

As to the tax, you need the MOT cert to do it, but it can have just 1 day left, so you can have 1 years tax, but very little/no MOT

I went through this last year with a car: I spoke to VOSA about it.

You can drive an un-MoTed car to a PRE-BOOKED MoT test at a station of your choosing anywhere in this fine land, be it 1 mile or 100 miles.

You may also drive it there untaxed, as it is impossible to tax an un-MoTed car.

You'd best buy a tax disc on your way back with your green sheet of MoT pass glory in your hand, otherwise the BiB can get you if you leave it a couple of days.

Well, thats what VOSA told me...

Ed.
P.S. If it fails, you may drive it home only. If you choose to, you will get charged at least a half fee for the retest. If you leave it at the garage, you may get a free retest once they have rectified the problem, depending on what was fcuked.

You may also drive it to a prebooked retest, you get th idea.........

My grey area happened when I tried to do my preSVA MOT. Went to the pre-arranged place and they said

"no way that cars going to get up onto our ramps"....

They went away and had a chat and came back and said

"Pitstop MOT 3 miles away can do it- they've got a pit so they can do it"

Went round only for them to say

"who are you? Nah- too busy, come back tommorow"

Lets just say I drove fairly carefully on the way back.... I'd driven about 10 miles on an unregistered unlicensed car (with insurance though) without actually getting the MOT test done!!! Oh well.....

I picked up my Bongo from Southampton docks, phoned to get insurance cover and then phoned my local garage to pre-book and MOT (and explained that I wouldn't actually be turning up for the MOT) and then drove the van all the way to Whitby with no numberplates or UK reg docs. Totally legally.
As an aside, you can't tax a vehicle if the tax is due to start after the MOT has expired. I know. I tried!!

MOT garage without a pit? They have to have a pit with access for the tester only to do tests nowadays don't they? I tested the van yesterday, got there at ten past eight and was third in the queue . The garage I use charge £30 a test and you can take a fortnight to get back and still get a free retest, I asked but the van passed anyway.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

you could buy the tax if you still have the old mot certificate if it still has time left on it even if your new mot is a fail.

there is no tax or mot. there is an old one but its expired. I believe it will fail but just needs a couple of easy adjustments to pass. was planning to do this at a friends house near where the car is located but he doesnt seem to be too interested to help me at the moment. Think he is busy with his own stuff right now. So i thought i could book a test here and drive it up.

is this risky?

I drove my kit cat to a pre-booked MOT test 30miles from home. Un-licensed so no plates or tax. I only had the SVA certificate from the previous week. I was pulled over by some traffic police, they had a look round, checked my details and let go on my way.
