EMISSIONS HELP DESPERATELY NEEDED

Hiya all.

My Tintop failed its MOT on emissions today. As many of you know I'm currently a VERY poor mature student (thanks in part to the wonderful policies of this government)

So need to fix it myself.

The figures from the test are as follows...

Fast Idle test 1

limits actual pass/fail
Speed 2450-2850 2671 pass
CO: <0.30% 5.71% fail
HC: <200ppm 218ppm fail
^ 0.97-1.03 0.855 fail

Fast Idle Test 2

Speed 2450-2850 2679 pass
CO: <0.30% 5.3% Fail
HC: <200ppm 196ppm Pass
^ 0.97-1.03 0.853 Fail

Nutural Idle

Speed 690-990 804 Pass
CO: <0.50% 8.60% Fail

As you can see my CO levels are way up...

Any ideas where I should start looking to find and fix the fault?

signed...... Desperate in Poole.

Your failing by quite a bit.....

My tintop did similar last year, was a combination of dodgey plug (incompetant citreon mechanics bodging), dodgey temp sensor and also a dodgey coil pack (but i didnt fix that).

Mine went from 10x over to barely registering

I have had exactly the same kind of readings on my rover vvc last week

wiring fault and lamda sensor

check wiring

wd40 all electrical plugs

fit a new lamda

your oil is probably full of emissions to which will take the C/O up still once youve fixed it so chage the oil with a flush etc

I cant help you with your emissions problem but i do know that before an MOT, if you run you tank right down and then fill it up with any of the super unleaded fuels, it reduces the emissions.
This might help a bit.

looks like an oxygen sensor fault from the readings (lambda sensor)

It sounds like the ecu is running in safe mode (when some sensors brake the ecu will go to safe mode; i.e. more fuel in order to avoid the engine overheating).

I suggest you to go to a Seat dealer. They can read the ecu and tell you if there is a problem with a sensor.

With that knowledge you can go hunt for a cheap replacement and install it yourself.

I know that there are kits on the internet that make it possible to read your ecu on a standard laptop. Don't know the cost though and I have never worked with them.

If the cat is broken; try to borrow one from somebody with a similar car.

Good luck!

Had more than a few VWs with faulty coolant temperature sensors, ECU goes onto limp home mode. Also check coolant level and temperature as low coolant level can cause problems . Would have thought the high hydrocarbons are caused by the rich mixture rather than a missfire .

It's not misfiring.

But I can rev over 3000 fine.... I was under the impression that in limp home mode it wouldn't let you rev over 3000?

I do have two intermittent faults on the car....

1) SOMETIMES when it's cold I start the engine and it starts fine.... but then stalls immediately, wont idle. This tends to go away when the engine has warmed up.

2) The water temp gauge on the dash should stay at 90.... but more often than not wont register any temp at all. Sometimes it does go up to 90 then when I look again a little while later it's back at 60 (the lowest setting on the dial)

Don't know if either of these would give some clue as to the reasons behind the dodgy emissions thou?

First check for vacuum-hoses which are broken.

They can cause such results.

High CO means you are running rich.
High HC means you have misfire.

Assuming things there are the same as here, you should only be putting out 0.5% CO BEFORE the cat, and virtually 0% after. So we know that you are running rich, thats step 1 to correct. Common things that can cause over fueling are: Faulty O2, faulty CTS, dripping injectors, faulty fuel press reg.
You will need to figure out why you are dumping too much fuel in before you try emmisions again. The next step would be to find out whether the computer is commanding the un-needed fuel, or if its a mechanical failure.
Cheers.

It is running open loop -- usual suspects coolant temperature sensor, lambda sensor. It could even be something as simple as the thermostat stuck open.
