Tin Top - Help please.

I have a R plate WV Passat 1.9 TDI.

On the motorway this morning the gearbox froze - as in I could not select any gears.
I pulled onto the hard shoulder and tried every gear, it felt as though the linkage had seized. the gearlever would move from side to side but would not move backwards or forwards with the engine running.
I turned the engine off and could select all gears.
I tried to start the engine in gear but the car tried to move forward as if the clutch wasn't disengageing.
Eventually I got the car started and all seems OK now. the clutch bite point seems to be OK at about 1/3 of the travel from the top. There's no graunching or slip.

Anyone else ever had this?

You help would be appreciated.

Neil

I had a similar issue once with a 306 1.9td. I lost all gears whilst on the m25, couldn't select anything. Pulled over and had to have the car recovered. It was syncro ring/hub and selector fork that the garage replaced. Seems odd that it 'came back' for you.

One of my friends once had this about half a year ago, again in a 306. He was phoning for breakdown when we switched the engine off, put it into gear, turned the engine on and away it went and is still going to this day!

A friend had this in a 307, unable to select any gears. Pulled over, restarted and all was fine. 5 miles down the road and the gearbox seized. Flywheel had disintegrated, the clutch had somehow entered the gearbox.

All sorted in warranty, off the road for 7 months though!

Sounds like your clutch wasnt disengaging if it selected ok when the engine was off.

Dodgey master cyl or slave??

If it does it again, try giving it a little rev while pushing it into gear. It should slide through the syncro and into gear. If it does you can drive it home like this just use the starter to pull away. Diesels are easy to drive with no clutch. Deffo the clutch if it works like this.

slave cylinders fail on the vag motors, have replaced one on an octavia and one on an a6 in the last six months, they will not disengage sometimes, and cause exactly the fault you are describing, sometimes the pedal sticks to the floor when they fail too
