water injection limits/stops detonation by several methods.

Firstly it cools the mixture in the cylinder due to the very high specific heat capacity of water and its high latent heat of evaporation, thus preventing hot spots that cause detonation.

Secondly the rapdily forming water vapour/steam breaks up any "structure" to the mixture in the cylinder, destroying any hotspot "seeding points" where detonation is prone to occurring.

Next, on forced induction engines it can cool incoming charge improving volumetric efficiency dramatically (though actually increasing likelihood of det. in a strange way, though the previous points then couteract that tendency! )

Lastly, it can be combined with methanol, which is nearly as effective as water at anti-det, but also burns to give a smidge more power too!

anything that increases volumetric efficiency will, for a given static compression, increase dynamic compression..................
