OT How safe is cash?
I know there was athread on this subject a while ago but I cant find it. Sorry!
My brother is selling his car & has someone coming to look at it, they want to pay cash. How safe is it these days when you're talking about
a few thousand?
If he pays it into a bank or building society & they accept it & pay it into your account before handing over the car is he safe?

We did just that last month with £4K...
The guy turned up..handed over the cash..we counted it and did a runner to the bank whilst he looked over the car...
Once the money is in the bank its their problem not yours...
Best bet is to meet near a bank and do the deed there!

take him into your bank to pay it in himself if you are paranoid.

It seems genuine enough they are coming a long way & obviously want to drive the car away instead of having to come back for it.
The plan is to pay it in before handing the car over but we wernt sure if it was the bank's problem or his if they later turned out to be
dodgey.

Just have a couple of friends with you, preferrably big ones.
Count the cash in front of them, get a friend to check it and confirm the amount.
Then split the cash between the 2/3 of you - if one of you gets jumped, you only loose 1/3rd of the money...
I've had to pick up some 'large' amounts of cash from some less than desirable locations. We used to split it, and then have
prearranged meeting locations - usually banks - to recollect the money !

If you are really concerned do as Joel says, let them decide to take the car, take them to the bank and pay it directly in. No time in the middle to
get robbed and if the banknotes are dodgy then they will be picked up before you lose out.
I sold my last car for cash, £5k. I made sure my misses and a mate were round at the time and I counted out the cash and checked quite a few of the
notes with a tester pen I got from WHSmiths for about £5.
The only thing that surprised me was when I turned up at the bank with £5k in used notes and the cashier didn't even bat an eyelid. Stuck it on
their money weighers, stamped my book and stuck it in her drawer, she didn't even check one note! I was at least expecting some comment on
having that kind of cash.

The bank might not be concerned, but I have heard that you can have problems with the lovely boys in blue who are entitled to investigate anyone
carying large sums of money (over £3k I think) in case they are terrorists trying to launder money. That is what comes from living in a free
society......

Speaking as an ex bank cashier I can confirm that the reason we do that is two fold:
1. its surprising how many people wonder around with, and pay in really large sums of money sometimes £10k+
2. The money is all insured anyway, plus I've only ever seen one fake £20 note so far! Oli.

as people say once its been accepted its their problem.
If your not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room!

working in a bookies i can confirm some people will walk around with thousands on them, its amazing how much some people will bet!
we also pay the money we make in to the post office, have stood in a queue with nearly £5k in my bag! they never seem bothered by it, except £50 notes
they go over those with a fine toothcomb.
has anyone seen the new £20 notes? is causing probs as our betting machine won't accept them!

cash does the deal for me, sold my last car for cash and bought my pervious with cash. 13k . he counted every note.

Take care they're not too ink stained!
I have some relatively reliable infomation that a large portion of the ink stained money from that £53m heist has come on the 'market'.
