complete rip off?

Hi Guys,

Just bought a couple of wiper blades for my Renault Scenic. They cost me £60 for the pair. What a rip off .....or am I completely out of touch with spares prices, is this the norm??

It's a pesky Renault, not a Merc for heavens sake!!

Never paid more than £18 a pair when I had a Ford.

Be interested to know what you Guys think before I write to Renault and vent my spleen!.

Cheers

Dave

Ouch! Seems a bit steep. The most I have ever paid is £20/pair. I take it this is from the dealer? Just get 'em from Halfrauds...

Tried Halfrauds, they don't do the sets from 2004 onwards.

Yup it's a main dealer....Robbin barstewards of Leicester.

Cheers

Write and complain, it worked for calvinX, they may even give you an espace as compenstation.

Could you not just replace the bladees - surely no manufacturer would redesign so you cannot change the blades themselves?

Halfords are useless. I went in just over a year ago to buy a rear wiper blade for my 2002 honda civic. I couldn't find anything on the shelves so i asked. He started tapping away on his computer and said 'your car doesn't have a rear wiper'. He actually got quite mad saying that my car doesnt have one and hew wouldn't let me go out and show him so i went home, went on ebay, brought a blade and it came next day.
I dont go back in there now unless im desperate for something.

I work in the aftermarket parts supply and yes things are so much more costly than ever before. The wipers are the new flat blade type which is an expensive design. The outside skeleton has been removed and a steel/fibre rod which has to follow the compound curves of the screen has replaced it, at huge cost. The designers like the look but the cost is huge at the side of traditional designs.
And if you think that is bad a customer of ours bought a hedlamp bulb for hie Renault Velsatis, £80 from us, £600 from the dealer. This are the xeon type nut ours is available seperat to the generator which the renault one isn't.
Electric calipers on many of the VW audi range, speed sensors etc etc all have price tags which I used to pay for whole cars.

you can buy those 'flat blade types' from speeding.co.uk for about £12.

Thanks guys. Interesting what Spaximus has to say. It's all well and good making technologically advanced all singing dancing blades at exhorbitent prices, but when all's said and done, it's the rubber bit that does the work and fails after a couple of years.....doesn't matter how brilliant the rest is, you end up chucking away the most expensive part.

Ecologically friendly?? I think not.

Wish I'd thought of ebay. Ah well I won't be a mug next time.

Incidentally, I rang the dealer to see if a mistake had been made...no such luck, but I asked the guy at Renault if he would shell out this much for the blades..........his reply: " I don't drive a Renault"...........wise man!!!!!!!

I'am now going to vent my spleen with Renault UK.

Cheers Guys

the case grows for me not buying a car thats even close to new with spares that expensive, along with being really complex and difficult to work on. can't believe how expensive it all is, the newest car i would buy would be a 1999 or 2000 model car.

you should get a car without a screen, then you don't need wipers... a seven, perhaps?

Seriously though, can you not get just the rubber bit from Halfrauds, or is the rubber bit a special type as well? That's what I have done in the past, as the arm part is usually completely fine. As stated above, it's the rubber which wears out, not the rest

Been there, built it, driving it and got the flies in my teeth to prove it (Viento without screen)

The rubbers on the wipers cannot be removed sadly. I know what you mean though, in the good old days I've done just that, but then the complete units were pretty cheap.....until now that is!!

Cheers

Moral of the story is if you want something cheap to maintain and fun to drive and reliable, buy a ford or vauxhall

If you want something unreliable and expensive to repair buy something French, Spanish, Italian, German or Malaysian!

Some designers are very good at clever design, but terrible at designing for servicing or reliability. Someone needs to teach them to design for the full duty cycle! (sorry getting in the mood for the quality exam tomorrow )

You think that is expensive, check out the cost of a main dealer 72,000 mile service for a Renault Espace V6 . Not much change from £2500!

I wouldn't say that. If you dont mind your car being slow, not really very good looking and common to all women over 80 then a hyundai makes a good buy with their 5 year warranty
