Small Dog Kennel

We are thinking about getting a small dog soon and i want to know how big to make a kennel and run?
Not having much space free, what size is yours? How do you think i should i make it? How small can it be?

Sorry for being a novice when it comes to dogs.

cheers all

What type of dog?
What property do you have?
Very expensive pedigree show dog or std pet?

i ask cos some dogs are yappy and may need to be careful with noise? Some hate heat and need more shelter? Some need extra security.

I had 2 retrievers, the living room was 4' x 6' and bed area was 4' x approx 3'. Took loads of space up but was great. One of the dogs hated being in the house, was from field trial stock and couldnt handle central heating, other is white haired pet and likes to sit on the fire.

Heres n idea. Get a smallish shed, put false floor in at approx kennel height. Door in bottom for dog - you could even have a bed end and a mesh sided end. The top half could then be used for storage etc. If you want outside run you could have an area in front of shed with small fence around and a gate etc.

The run i describe above was fantastic and great for the dogs but took up a lot of room and couldnt be used for anything else. i should have spent a bit more for shed type thing.
