I got the trial thingy version, before full release. Then they wanted $50 for the 'upgrade'.
Didn't bother, you can't beat Solidworks for everyday work and cost/benefit basis. The only thing I use that's better ( but less
user friendly in some ways) is Catia, and I wouldn't use that unless the licence came with my contract!

Should have added, that a good friend has got himself onto the Solidworks Developer program, and pays £80/month for his full all singing and dancing
package with fluid flow, FEA and a load of other top end attachments. No £1000's up front, just £80 from day one.
