WWII V1 Doodlebug found in Canary Wharf!

Tonight I am at work
600 yards from a WWII BOMB !
I have been wondering how to fit some wheels on it and get it through sva all night !
Hopefully I will still be here in the Morning

Pulse jet needs airflow to get started. V1 s were fired from a giant catapult to get them going! Mind you its an interesting alternative to NOS for that extra bit of acceleration!

S' a myth apparrently (the bit about pulse jest needign airflow to start), according to Wiki anyway. They need the cat/assissted launch due to their flight characteristics.

Pulse jets do need airflow to start, but I can't see any sane (or even mildly insane) person relying on hurling a big bomb through the air to do it. If it doesn't catch then someone a couple of hundred metres downrange is going to have a bad day...

At a guess, they probably used compressed air to get the process going. Once they're running they'll keep going, even when stationary.

I've seen a R/C model Blackbird that used 2 pulse jets - now that was NOISY!

They were definitely lit before being sent up the ramp that's what provided the power for lanch.
The reason for the ramp was partly to aim, and partly to avoid the need for an undercarriage (you can see the launch trolley falling away in this film)

They made a pulse jet powered gocart on Scrapheap Challenge once. I seem to recall that they started it with a leaf blower.


The engine that they made was basically a U shaped pipe with propane being fed into the bend. A spark plug fired the fuel causing a big bang that sent the exhaust out of both ends of the tube, creating thrust. The speed of the exhaust gasses caused a vacuum in the pipe, sucking in clean air into the tube where the propane was being fed and the whole lot sparked again.

it was LOUD. Very, very loud. It glowed orange and it went quite well too.
