welding 'Modern car' sills
I have found two holes in the sills of my 97 MK3 golf VR6 around the jacking points. I have cut out the rot and have made two new peices to weld
in.
Heres my question i have restored a few pre 75 cars from ground up but this is my first 'Modern' car. I plan to disconnect the ECU, the
alternator and the battery as well as placing the earth clamp as close to the patch as possible. Anything else i should conside unplugging?

some newer cars have sound proofing foam in the sills and wires !!
remember to pull back the carpet i have torched a car before doing sills underseal went up insde the front wing and went through to under the dash in
seconds.
my advice would be to cut a bit out with a grinder and have a good look some scrap yards will cut the bits you need out for a £10 so there no need to
beat out the shape you need .
(r u sure its not drain holes)

I've welded plenty modern cars (mainly exhausts) using a MIG & not disconnected anything. The boss is a bit old school & doesnt belive
anything could be damaged "never mind that crap, it's just alternators that get buggered by the old stick welder. MIGS dont harm
anything" is what I get told.
And after 15 years of doing what I'm told I've not seen anything come to any harm so mabye he's right!
The other thing is customers rarely know their radio code & diconnecting the battery causes plenty problems that way.
Someone will no doubt say my boss is wrong & it cost them £1000s to get a new ECU, they may well be right & we've just been incredibly
lucky.
