Mig welders?
What is a gasless mig welder like to use? At work we use normal mig welders with gas. I need to weld my rollcage up at home now and the only way of
getting a welder is to hire one and they only have the gaslesss ones to hire.

Hi,
I'm no expert however I use a Clarke MIG 150TE with gas it only cost £100 off secondhand off ebay and it works well.
I understand that gasless welders use flux in the wire and that can cause spitting when welding.
I would definately recommend using an automatic mask that darkens when you weld.
Cheers,
David

I was sceptical about using one as all I have used (again at work) was gassed but last weekend I was introduced to gassless and to be honest I found
it fine to weld with, the material did get a little hotter than with gas and when finished needeed wire brushing to bring up to a shine but apart from
that it was ok.

Gasless is OK-ish - it does the job, but carries its own problems. For a start, the wire is thicker, usually 0.9mm, and I had to re-drill some tips
to suit. Also it leaves a thick dusty deposit after welding, which needs to be wire-brushed off.
A big advantage is that it works well outdoors in a breeze, as there's no gas to blow away.
Apart from that - it made a decent weld.

i have one, used it occasionally for years, though i was just rubbish at welding... poor penetration, messy, lumpy welds.
this year i bought a clarke 151te, welded amazingly straight out the box! definitely get a gas one, you'll use it more than you think

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Gasless?
Although I learnt to weld with a gas mig I have only ot the use of a gasless mig and an arc welder at home. I have done all my chassis construction
using the gasless.
It produces a lot of spatter, but can produce strong and decent welds if you take the time to practice.
So, although I would have no qualms about using a decent gasless mig, I wish I had invested in a dual or gas mig at the start - I would have had to
spend a lot less time clearing spatter and would have ended up with a nicer looking piece of work.
