Golf 1.8t chip???
hey chaps! my cuz has a golf IV and was wondering what your thoughts were on chipping it (1.8t)
it is, so i am told, 150 bhp which seems a wee bit low. will a chip kill or enhance fuel eco??
Thanks again and sorry it's off topic!

Don't know about petrol, but chipping/re-mapping diesels to higher BHP/torque doesn't seem to hurt economy (unless you cain it obviously).
Many have actually reported slightly better mpg and smoother performance.

this is exactly why i asked actually. I was not sure if a similar story is true for the petrol

I'd say its worth doing.
my car (1.8t 180bhp quattro) used to do 360 miles out of a tank. the remap took it upto 230bhp and now I also get 400miles minimum from a tank.

i guess you reduce the life of the engine?
Why would VW downtune their engine in the first place? Is it for emmisions? Do you have a remove the chip (is this possible) for the MOT?

Mines approaching 100k, not even killed a clutch yet, no smoke or anything. Had it remapped since about 30k with normal servicing and never failed an
mot yet.

This HP is the same as my (Old) Octavia VRS: at 180hp (same engine anyway) so no it doesn't hurt... awesome engine!

I think VW set it that way because of emissions.
Seat Leons with this engine are chipped to 180 BHP as standard and they don't seem to suffer. Cupra's are chipped to over 220 BHP and
neither do they.
It's more to do with the way the car is driven

My Cupra went from 180 to 220 90k miles and still going strong, the Cupra R's are 225 as std and 260/280 chipped
or you can go for a bigger turbo from JabberSport and get 350+
IIRC their was a guy on SeatCupra.net Badger Bill i think his name was who had a Ibiza with a highly modded 1.8T engine in it with 350+

Might be worth looking at the Revo chip.
My friend had it fitted to his Cupra and it was a huge difference.
You can even switch it off when it comes to servicing it at VAG.

i took my audi A6 1.8T to jabbasport at peterborough.
4 hours later on the rolling road and the power had gone from 150bhp to 225bhp.
better fuel economy as well.
it transformed the car, i would definatley recommend jabbasport .
cost about £500.00 and that included a bailey dump valve (£100.00) for reliabilty as the OEM plastic ones tend to break when you put more boost
through them.

Re the Revo chip, the ability to switch the map modes needs a seperate box you plug into the ODBII port and IIRC costs an extra ~£200
Mines Revo but i didnt get the box
