fifth gear last night

no idea if it was a repeat etc, don't watch much telly, but why is this programme such utter crap?

Last night they did 3 meaningless tests on a nissan 350z vs a bmw coupe somethingorother, but most incensingly, covered some 0-60 crap and gave a heap of factually incorrect info.

There was some ariel atom running mid to low 3 sec 0-60, setting fire to its clutch on each run, which they were suggesting could take the record of 2.8 secs......

well Ultima has done official times of 2.6 secs on consecutive and repeated occasions on numerous surfaces in two directions, on road tyred (e marked not just dot approved) as required, all monitored by datron's official timing chap with datron gps gear, and submitted to guinness, and published by EVO magazine.......................................

I would watch it if they swapped Butler-Henderson with that nice lady that bombs around the Nurbugring. And that Tiffy Needle bloke give me the trots.

lol

me too!!!

Blunder Hunchbackson really cannot drive either, which doesn't help!

At least Clarkson et al on top gear acknowledge that they can't drive.

The program was utter kack on a lot of levels - blathering on about a low rider on hydraulics give me strength.

I also thought the Ultima had an official time with guiness that was better than the record they were whittering about. Seems a little rude not to invite them along, as I'm pretty sure their clutch would have survived better. Pretty sure a radical would have also done better than the atom.

I've always hoped top gear would get Sabine on as a full time presenter instead of the stig nonsense. VBH was acting like an over excited 6 year old boy (I know I've got one at home!!!).

Just a thought on th 0-60 thing.... they seemed to be production cars. so maybe kit cars weren't eligeable?

Cheers

When he first appeared on the telly I thought his name was Tiffany Dell... which worried me a bit...

5th Gear has been OK in the past, but now it just annoys me. The camera's always jumping around, half the time it's not in focus, and so on. I presume they think it makes it exciting, but in reality it just makes it hard to watch.

If I could I'd like to invite the producers to look at an award-winning programme like the Blue Planet (or any other Attenborough film), which people enjoy watching over and over. The camera is ALWAYS on a tripod, and does NOT wave around. It's relaxing to watch, and people like to watch it because of the personality of the presenter, his skill in presenting the subject and the craft of the cameraman.

<end rant!>

I was also a bit dissapointed with it last night... quite why i stayed on the sofa watching it rather than venturing out into the garage i dont know...

I was under the impression that the Tiger Z100 WR held the current guiness record for 'production car' at something mad like 2.8

Although that might have changed as Veyron's official time is 2.9 (or similar) but has been recorded faster. Ultima GTR has been timed at 2.6 although im not sure that it was in 'production' spec.

ETA: Not that it matters as 0-60 times are pretty meaningless and pretty much amount to a p%%%ing contest

Exactly - Surely a more balanced approach is better and gives a true idea of what its like to live with a particular car on a day to day basis.

Its all very well to say that Ultimas go mega fast from 0-200-0 but how many can go round corners like an Atom? Put them up against each other on a 'sensible' race track - that will give a true impression of what they are like to drive

I totally agree.......................

and err, yea the ultima makes the atom appear rather slow around corners as well!!!

The only thing we have come across on track days etc that it can't just drive around is a radical.

The radical is much slower on the straights but IS quicker in the corners (certainly at donington at least)

Unfortunately the only cars that I have ever witnessed that "beat" the ultima on track were on slicks, so not a fair contest as as far as I know my mate and his dad have never run an ultima on slicks other than when they cleaned up years ago in 750 mc kit cars and then got banned

Even track days are hard to compare on though because you never know how good the other drivers are!! We have been on track with a caterham R500 and we passed it in 1/4 of a lap and then lapped it within 6(or 7, can't remember) laps (donington again) but maybe it wasn't being driven that hard, though it seemed to be locking a wheel under braking now and again so must have been trying fairly hard.

All in all hard to say!

Certainly I have been around donington in the 650hp (old engine, now 720) ultima demo car on road tyres, and a radical sr3 on dunlop slicks (race car during last years championships) and the ultima was way quicker on the straights, had similar braking distances but was slower in the corners (again remember the tyres). The radical was mentally quick through the old hairpin, felt really unsafe through there, which probably explained the off in qualifying there that ripped all one side of the car off!!

Its just that Ultima always seem to concentrate on the straight line records with brutish power and you never seem to hear about any track times. Maybe I need to look harder to find their twisty achievements.

yea, they have lately, because everybody else was doing it.

They concentrated on that to capitalise on the publicity as everybody seemed to be doing 0-60, 0-100 etc.

(Tiger, noble, caterham etc etc)

Look on their website and you'll see the concenmtric circle cornering G test they did, where they beat ALL the major sportscars by a huge margin (almost a ridiculous margin compared to the mclaren F1 )

Also do some googles on Bob Light, Lee Noble and Ted Marlow...........

At one point one or anther of them held a lap record on every track in the uk......in an ultima!

Here ya go, on their website, extract from Kit Car International magazine, fomr 1993!!!!, many years ago when Ted first set up Ultima Sports as a company sell them for road use, I remember him picking Richard up from school on it when I was at school with him, doing my GCSE's!

linky

and this line in particular, bearing in mind the GTR now handles much better than the ols sports......

"Of course, the car was never designed for such restrained use but if you are going to build one for road use, the laws of the land apply to you as much as the vicar in his 2CV. If you're building it for competition, you have the confidence inspired by a car that holds the outright lap record for a car on road tyres for every circuit on which it has competed. "

Also see the bit where it mentions McLaren buying two ultimas when designing the F1.

Another major british manufacturer has also recently bought several to assist with a new car design, though it looks like that may have been canned due to recent sale/aquisition of said company.
