smell of Nitrous oxide

Yesterday, a Smart car overtook me much faster than I thought these things could go.
After it had passed I could smell something that reminded me of the smell of gunfire.
Is that what happens in a car using Nitrous oxide?

I've read they add Hydrogen Sulphide to automotive NOS to stop people sniffing it recreationally (presumably by killing them if they try).

H2S smells of rotten eggs, I guess when it's burnt it will produce other sulphur compounds including sulphur dioxide - gunpowder also produces sulphur compounds so it sounds plausible to me.

Most likely the cat was warmed up.

it was probably the smell from the driver's trouser regions as he realised the accelerator was jammed fully on!!!

It is more poisonous than cyanide, BUT you can smell it very strongly in minute amounts.
Some sources that claim H2S:

Though potentially it's just american stuff that has it added.

That would be the medical grade stuff, they don't add evil smelling poison to that for some reason

There is some BEC smart, although I think you'd notice it Screaming rather than its smell.

What a set of spoil sports poisoning the Auto Grade NOS,
Would be interesting to see which give you the biggest smile, NOS in the Engine or NOS inhaled from a Baloon Helium style lol

oh, well I guess it wasn't NOS then.
I've had the same smell a few months ago after another car passed faster than I'd have expected
