second part of flywheel will have a little movement but they are prone to breaking normally fill starter with cr*p is one of the first signs a solid flywheel and clutch kit is now available think its a valeo part or ford are also selling them but lots more money hope this helps

There will be some movement in it. It will turn a bit and rock a bit. (technical terms innit). Aslong as the bits dont knock against each other. Make sure you suck all the dust out of the bellhousing etc or they still do the starters in.

We are fitting the solid kits at work now. They come with solid flywheel, clutch and new release lever. Much better, no more judder, knocking or starter trouble. The kits have been out for a while and are still special order from most ldv and ford agents. They arnt actually that much more money than a dual mass one.

The iveco ones when theyr new have soo much movement in them they appear knackered to start with.

The reason for having a Dual Mass flywheel is to erradicate the excess vibrations from the engine. If you replace with the solid flywheel kit you will transfer the vibration to the gearbiox and it will wear that out.
LUK hold the patent on 95% of all dual mass flywheels, the rest are valeo. If the technology wasn't needed the vehicle manufacturer would save the money and not fit them in the first place.
There is allowable movement by placing your hand on the centre part if you can rotate it until it hits the stops or has a rocking motion then it needs changing. Hard to describe but easy to check. Any that have covered in excess of 40k with usual van driving standards will need changing.
The dust that shags the starters is the metal wearing off the end stops because they are driven too long with Knackered flywheels.
I can put you in touch with the LUK technical department who could probably explain it better.
The only reason to fit a solid replacement is to save money short term, okay if you are a fleet operater and the van is going to the auctions

Got a poster from LUK IIRC today e , haven't had a chance to read it fully yet but it did show how to check dual mass flywheels. Might be worth asking your local LUK dealer for one.
