Scalextric Digital - Any good?

Hi,
My son is quite keen to get a scalextric set for christmas (his idea - honest!) and he was talking about the transformers "micro" scalextric kit. I'm not keen on him getting the micro set and would rather he got the proper set. I used to have a huge track when I was a boy (still in the loft somewhere) but things have changed a bit since then it seems.

Anyone tried the Scalextric Digital sets? Any good?

I saw an old thread on the forum from 2004 which was talking about Ninco and Fly as alternatives - are they really better? Are they compatible with Scalextric Digital?

Any advice most welcome!
Thanks,
Craig.

The ninco digital set is suposed to be one of the best, and is compatible with any scaelectrix car as far as I can tell.

You simply have the controler and a little board that you wire into the car...

I dont actually have the unit, but thats what I have read

Craig,

Get your old set out the loft! I am sure your kid will have loads of fun with it! buy a couple of new cars let him drive these and you drive the oldies, give him a chance!

Hi Guys,
Thanks to all of you for your comments.

Caber, my old set is in pretty poor shape I'm afraid - it got used to death almost by me and my numerous cousins and the last time I used it you spent more time sorting out bad connections than actually playing with it... My Dad used to sell the track in his shop when I was a boy and I used to get more and more track every year, especially when it went through a phase of being less popular. I should be able to resurrect some of the track though but I'd like him to start with a fully working setup to get him hooked - can you imagine the let down of spending hours fixing bad connections as a nine year old... I remember it well!!

I'll look into the Ninco stuff as it seems to be well regarded although it doesn't quite have the same ring to it does it?

Cheers,
Craig.
