tin top woes?
My daily drive - pug 406 2.1td Estate with 117000 on the clock 'might' be playing up!
I changed the oil and filter at 115k and have used a bottle of redex diesel injector cleaner in it. I then ran up to Scotland and back in it with no
signs of anything untoward, in fact it was going very well indeed.
However it now seems to be much noisier on startup and initial idle than before.
After half a mile when i get to my 1st set of lights with the window down it sounds fine again.
In addition to this (with being paranoid and driving more often with the wondow down) the turbo seems to be making a bit of a 'whistle'
Is a whistling turbo a sign that its on its way out?
I have noticed no discernable drop in performance or economy so far, or no excessive smoking.
I hope its not on its way out because it looks like a right bitch to get to - anyone changed one before? if so is it easy/hard?
Any suggestions much appreciated.

most turbos whistle slightly under load, a small leak on a pressure hose can amplify this, the extra noise could be because the injectors are
delivering more fuel if the redex has done its job causeing a bit of diesel knock on cold start.
i would sugest shutting the window and add a little volume to your faourite radio station

I wouldnt worry about it mate until something actually goes wrong. Turbos normally whistle..
As for the funny running, redex can cause more harm than good if its never had anything like that through it before. Often when an engine and
companents wear the crap can take up the worn space. Cleaning it through makes the wear appear as the crap isnt blocking it up. If that makes any
sense.

PUg 406
I will put money on it being the Pully wheel for the Aux drive belt.
They are rubber mounted to prevent vibration and as the rubber decays thay start to create an itermitant knocking sound , similar to noisy tappets but
from the lower part of the engine.
The pully will normally only last around 100,00 miles. I had the same issue and replaced the pully and belt at 124,000.
Its mounted on the end of the crank and cost around £80 for a new one.
It can be a bugger to replce the belt as the tensioner is a bit of a nightmare to use and get the belt back on.
Thats where my meny lies in this one.

Same engine as my XM which has now done over 250,000 and still runs sweet. As already stated the Peugeot version has an automatic belt tensioner that
causes problems, the easiest way to get at the tensioner lower bolt is to take off the oil filter and remove the center bolt from the oil cooler,
swing the cooler to one side to get at bolt. Also check the crank pulley for wear.
