Mull

Weve just booked up to take the kids to Ballamory in the summer (Tobermory). Booked a cottage for the week. Does anyone know Mull quite well and cn recommend a few more things to do than wonder where Miss Hoolie's nursery is?

Id like to see some eals / dolphins / whales etc and maybe catch a fish with eldest daughter (not with her as bait i hasten to add LOL).

Also wondering about best ferry route? We are just taking the car (no trailer etc).

Thanks in advance,
Darren.

Right, we go every year in october to watch or spanner on the tour of Mull rally, which is an AWESOME event.

We go the scenic route, if the kids are ok for a bit more of a drive its worth doing!

Drive up to Glasgow, then up the west side of Loch Lomond, then past Crianlarich, then at Tyndrum take the right fork to go up towards Glen Coe and Fort William. The drive past Bridge of Orchy and Glen Coe, through Rannoch moor, is absolutely the best scenery in the british isles, no question.

Follow the road on through Glen Coe and Ballachulish, keep going until you get to Inchree and Bunree, then get the Corran ferry (a fiver) across to Ardgour and Corran then turn left and follow the road towards strontian until you come to a left turn signed for Lochaline (about 12-15 miles) which goes over a flat marsh bridge. Turn down there, follow the road (again STUNNING scenery) to Lochaline, hop on the ferry across to Fishnish on Mull (about £30 return iirc)

On Mull you won't be short of things to do, certainly tour the island for a start and wonder at how they manage to average getting on for 100mph on the tiny roads on the rally, then visit teh beautifuol beach at Calgary Bay, Glengorm castle is nice, great pub at Dervaig, distillery at Tobermory worth a look round, drink a pint at Mishnish Arms in Tobermory, go seal and whale watching, plus eagle spotting.

loads and loads, most beautiful place I know.

Plus try a trip over to Iona and Ulva, plus Staffa and see Fingals cave. Head to the south end of the island for the eagles etc though I've never tried to see them, usually too busy.

It will take a couple of days just to explore the island by car, it is not that small and the roads take forever to get from a to b as they are so small and the scenery so lovely.

Also, fill your tank right up at Tyndrum (the green welly store) as after that petrol is more expensive than gold.

You know the pink castle isn't in Tobermory?
May need to manage expectations on that one

This seems good, but my two have grown out of Balamory now, but if anyone knows where to find Metru Nui that would be great

I agree with Mook about the distillery. And also to drive the long way round and cross localine/fishnish. Spent a few holidays on the Morvern peninsula and have crossed to Mull a few times.

You can get cheap(ish) petrol at the bottom end of Glencoe at the Shell garage.

Watch out for the midges. Take lots of repellant, or take up smoking a pipe.

Darren, meant to say up the WEST side of Lomond, not the east, doh!!!

The shell garage was being dug up in october, not sure if its being rebuilt or knocked down!! That's where I usually fill up to try and last out on the island. It was over 1.10 a litre in october!

Great answers so far, many thanks.

Im still a bit confused about ferries - is the oban route the most expensive / least recommended?

Mooky - Distillery - great minds think alike Top idea.

Is there a gym with Concept 2 rowers in Tobermory

Oban = shortest drive but most expensive ferry that you have to book.

Other ferries are not bookable in advance.

If you go from Oban you miss one of the best bits of driving in the british isles!
