eeeep! Even BMW don't charge that much for a programmed key!!

You'll probably find there's no alternative to it - unless you can find a specialist who has the gear to program new keys. Might be worth calling round a few different toyota franchises and see if they're any cheaper - sounds like a licence to print money!

Might be a valuable lesson for your daughter tho!

Thats alot. Have you tried an independant garage? When we needed a new key for our kangoo, the independant garage were cheaper than renault even though they got the ket through renault

I'd ring around the local lock smith's, i know my mate did this around here and he got it a hell of a lot cheaper than the manufacturer!

Dont know about toyotas, but on a 306 its not actaully the key thats programed.
- Every key is unique, and the car can be programed to respond to upto three keys.
- Hence there is a trade in second had keys from written off cars, which you can the programe to open your car, and have the actaul key part replace and cut to suit.

Otherwise you have to buy the key from pug for £90 odd, pick it up, get it cut by a third party, take it back to them and get the car programed to it, and hope you dont loose the only key you have in the month it takes to do the above.

Seem to recall there are specialists who can supply Toyota keys.
Try a google search toyota keys.
My aunt was quoted similar money by her Toyota Main dealer but ended up paying a local specialist about half the price.

These days on most car the cars security ECU has to be programmed to the new keys bar code ID number and the old lost key's ID blocked.
£160 to £180 is a typical main dealer charge for this.

On some cars the key may also be used to store extra info for example the cars mileage reading !

Not always a main dealer only job try looking for an automotive locksmith. A clone can also be made of the existing key by some high street key cutting chains but I am not sure how this works or if it just to replace a damaged key.

Asked a well informed mate about this apparently the Toyota ECU procedure is for the dealer to put the car ecu into learn keys mode, this wipes all existing keys from this system and the new and existing keys are them re-learn't by the system.

The address below might be worth a try -- but Isuspect you may end up with main dealers. Apparently some automotive locksmiths have the quipment to deal with the latest toyota system but they are only a handful in the UK.
