Almost exactly the same --- start by letting the handbrake cable tension off a bit -- the handbrake lever should come up a fair number of clicks before the hand brake bites on to the disc.

Most likely cause of trouble is the self-adjuster in the caliper is seized or has been broken when the pads were renewed by forcing the adjuster back without letting back the cable tension.

It is also possible the little lever on the caliper that operates the hand brake is sticking or the handbrake cable is partly seized.

Replacing the caliper is the easy option however prices vary greatly between model years.

In the short term you might be able to get it through MOT by adjusting up the caliper by hand.
