Wireless internet in scotland
Im going to scotland next week and wondered if there is any way i can still use the internet while up there.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

not wireless, but you'll have to take your own generator so you have electricity, and a very long phone cable to the nearest town in England so
you can plug it in and get dialup access

just take your lap top and drive around looking for an unsecured home system
one of the boys discovered one on our road, and when he wants to down load stuff and we complain he just connects to the other network
i've told him its wrong......
it's truly amazing how ignorant some people are about internet security...

i spent a few days working up in lybsyter (about 2 hours north of inverness) last year. checked on the hotel website before i left and it mentioned it
had wireless interness. Brilliant i'll take the lap top.
got up there and connected to check emails on the first day and it took the whole of breakfast to connect to google.
when i asked at recpetion if there was a technical problem the lady said no its fine, but you have to realise that the wireless is dial up and you
have to share that dial up connection with everybody else in the hotel, including the office!
didnt bother. just enjoyed the scenery instead!

Problem with the English is they take revenues from OUR oil producton, bitch and moan about the Barnet formula settlement of tax spend that gives a
slightly higher return per capita to Scotland because of the wide spread population then moan some more when they want to play in our nice wide open
spaces and can't find all the same services they get in the overcrowded South East!
As it happens BT have probably not spent the money to upgrade the exchange in Scrabster so that ADSL is possible, either that or it is so far away
from the exchange that ADSL won't work. This is the situation over very large areas of Northern Scotland! If you get a mobile phone signal
chances are one of the estates has paid for a repeater as the mobile networks don't pay to erect masts up there.
What you will find in many small towns and vilages the odd pub or cafe offering free wifi rather than the Starbucks pay as you go service, though even
that is available in the cities!
You can always use the free wifi on the east coast trains heading back down south if you can't hack it up here

I've never had a problem with WiFi in Hotels around the Glasgow/Edinburgh area though it can be slow at times.
Ditto with Mobile Signal too - gaffer thinks I'm skiving - (which of course I am!!! LOL) looking at the scenery and birdlife on the Estuary,
it's breathtaking!

out off curiosity where are you going in Scotland speedyxjs? Past Inverness things get a bit sparse but below that most have broad band. Forget about
the west coast they can't stop drinking long enough to wire it up.

I'm guessing the area you're off to is very remote?
If picking up a Wi-Fi signal isn't an option there is another way...
I've just signed up to one of those USB internet dongle contracts. They utilise mobile phone networks and are supplied by many of the network
providers.
Give someone in the town you are visiting a call (hotel, lodge, local shop etc.?) and ask if mobile coverage is OK.
If so then T-Mobile, Three and Vodaphone all do the same type of dongle and the monthly rates aren't that bad. There's even a 'pay
as you go' option.
My contract is with 'Three'. I went to Carphone Warehouse and paid nothing for the dongle but I'm tied into a 12 month contract at
£15.00 per month. Thought this was reasonable considering I work away from home every week and basically live in hotels.
Downloads are limited to 3Gb per month but I'm using it for business e-mail (and viewing locostbuilders) so I'm getting knowhere near that
limit.

Can be a little slow at times but more recently I've been using a 5 metre USB cable and sticking the dongle near my hotel windows.
It's what I'm using right now to type this.

Yep there is a Macdonalds in Fort William next to the Morrison's supermarket you will be going there to buy food so there's your chance to
log on and tel us how much you are enjoying it! Don't forget to buy a giant economy size Avon Skin-so Soft before you go and cover yourself in
it when you go out in the evening its still the best way to defend against Midges biting you!

that your best bet, but you should find something in Fort William somewhere or maybe Kinlochleven if your lucky (ice factor ??)
