Don't know if anyone's been following this, but checked up on it today after about a year since hearing of this hypercapacitor project and it looks like it's happening -

5 minute charge
Non-chemical
No memory effect
Near infinite cycles
0.1% per month self discharge
Decent range
Twice the energy density of lithium ion
Half the price per joule of lead acid

I really hope this happens I've been looking at designing an electric car for my daily commute (74 miles round trip) and these high energy density/low weight batteries would make that much more achieveable, especially cost wise. To do it with lithium Ion and get a decent range with killing the batteries because of the %DOD will cost abot £8K

Whilst a 5 minute charge might be theoretically possible, the amount of power involved would be horrendous. The wiki page suggests a storage capacity of 52kWh, to get this in 5 minutes requires a power source capable of delivering at least 624 kW!

Imagine dropping a spanner across the terminals!

True, you'd need another cell in the garage charging from the mains and then you'd zap the power from that one to the one in your car. Charging stations could have banks of the things ready so you can stop and charge. Still, even if you had to mains charge, with a 50A connection to your garage you could charge it at 12.5Kw which would top it up pretty fast.

I like the idea of roofing the garage with solar cells and using them to trickle charge a big eestor in the garage - if you had enough area for your mileage you'd never pay a penny in fuel again.
