Windscreen cracks - learnt something this week

In a previous thread mentioned my windscreen had been cracked - anyway 300 km on and two cracks where marching on to the center of my vision which, with 2000km to go till I got home, would have been problematical, so stopped at a small town that had a windscreen repair shop

No chance of getting a Subaru Outback replacement windscreen in any reasonable time but they said they could help stop the spread of the cracks.

The outside one he drilled a small hole about 12mm from the end of the crack then using a screw driver in the hole and gentle taps lead the crack to it and filled the crack with resin.

The inner one he couldn't do the same because of the dashboard and being beyond vertical the resin would just drip off so he spread two fingers on the outside of the windscreen about an inch below and 1/2 an inch beyond the crack and pushed gently - this caused the crack to turn downwards and run to the bottom of the windscreen.

Problem solved till I get home and can have windscreen repaired. Have already done 600 km with no spread of the crack.

And best off all he only charged me 4 quid for the job because he couldn't guarantee it.

At least I now know how to lead cracks in a better direction.
