Looking at changing my ISP from AOL (robbing sons of beaches) to either Eclipse or Virgin (non cable).
Anyone had any experience of either use cable Virgin at work and its brill but unfortunately I'm in a non cable area at home.
Cheers,
Bob

If you get your broadband through your phone line, then service wise it will be the same.
Example, if you got 3gb through talk talk (up to 8gb service) it will be the same 3gb limit with BT. This is because your line and distance from the exchange will limit your bandwidth.
If you are changing companies for a financial gain, then that will be the only difference.

No that isn't 100% true

If you go for an ADSL2+ supplier such as O2
This will give a little bit over TWICE the speed of a standard 8 mb ADSL ISP over the same line distance from the exchange.

Maximum Speed Over One Mile:
ADSL = 8Mbps
ADSL2 = 12Mbps
ADSL2+ = 20Mbps

The O2 package is particularly attractive -- even more soe if you have a O2 mobile phone.

I still stand by my first statement. The question was about Eclipse and Virgin.
I tried my area phone number for O2 broadband and it is not available.
Seeing as my BT line exchange is able to deliver broadband, then why not O2?
(I live in the London Area)
It seems that most areas will have to wait for new equipment to be installed.

as long as you dont want to download anything Virgin will be spot on but if you like torrents avoid like the plague.

Their fair usage policy says that they will limit you to 256 kB/s but some evenings I only get 10 kB/s. Saying that overnight the speeds are phenomenal but it can be very frustrating trying to get pics on this website to load when the FUP is being applied

Been with Eclipse for a while, avoid the download limited deals, go over and you get a BIG bill.

I use their unlimited service and it's good, but probably only as good as my line.

Customer service is good though, you can always get them on the end of a phone....

Used to be with Eclipse but they throttle speed when using the line for P2P. Changed to a company called ADSL24 and they are superb and never throttle d/l speeds.

Have a look at this website for comparisons, click me!!

You will notice that both Tiscali and Virgin don't fair very well.

Thanks lads, the capping info for torrents was what I needed to Know.
O2 isnt an option my exchange is not llu.
Guess I'll go with Virgin and schedule my torrents overnight.
Aol are capping the cahones out of me and charging £29.99 a month for the priveledge, if I was a new customer they'd give me a laptop and charge me £14.99 if youve been with em for years they dont give a monkeys.
If you want to find out whats in your exchange by the way try this site http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ and do an exchange search.
Cheers,
Bob

Try BE too if you can't get O2. They (BE) are owned by them (O2), but I think the networks are still seperate? I've got their service here and although it's not as quick as it could be (due to a crap line) it does go very well.

They cap NNTP traffic at 250kB/sec (2Mbit/sec) but if you bounce through an SSH tunnel they don't spot it and it runs full speed. Torrents I've no idea as I always download on my seedbox first.

On a seperate note, interesting to see ADSL24 mentioned. They are one of my clients, so if you go with them, say Hi to James (the MD) from me!

Looking at the comparison sites both eclipse and Virgin get a slating so I guess you pays your money.
Again my exchange isnt LLU Chris so Be aint an option
If we had a decent Telecoms company in this country other than BT they would fit decent kit in the exchanges so traffic shaping wouldnt be a problem.
Strange how this has never been a problem until BT launched thier BT Vision service and started robbing the bandwidth.
Cheers,
Bob
