Rolling Road on a budget

Went to a couple of rolling road companies yesterday, both are very proffesional and no doubt could do an amazing job of setting up my pinto and DGV....

However, they want around £250 for two hours work and have a 6-8 week waiting list...

I dont really want to spend that much, and I also dont really want to wait until next milenium!

Is there an easier/cheaper way of setting up this basic engine?

The biggest issue is getting the right jets, but im sure it cant be that hard...

How have other people got around this? Do I need to find a carb guru to wave his magic stick?

If you're not changing the timing then a wideband sensor would do the job for jetting. After all, jetting carbs is always going to be a compromise because you're limited by the choice of needle shapes.

Getting the mixture in the "ball park" isn't tricky as you can measure the lambda. For other adjustments like cam swinging, dizzy swinging etc you really need to be measuring BHP and then a RR is very useful.

The main reason people get their cars adjusted using a RR is so they can brag about the horse power that their new engine makes....

For just over £100 you can get a wideband sensor and controller, then you just need to have (or borrow) a laptop to attach it do anda collection of needles... Job's a good'un.

Where are you?

From my experience on a rolling road (1300 x-flow on a single carb) I found that the rolling road can diagnose ignition problems, ensure you're correctly fuelled and set the timing correctly. They can do little else unless you're into modifying the engine or reprofiling the dizzy etc.

Obviously all engines are different, but there must be published settings for the jets/timing from somebody who has already had the work done, and then tweak your car from there.

Other than that, and if you want the snazzy graphs for the garage wall it's a case of hunting around for the best deal.

Check out Dave Andrews website HERE

He has a couple of bits of software that can predict jet sizing etc... based on some pretty simple engine data. Give those a try first and then maybe a Lambda sensor etc...

Im in Malvern, Worcestershire.

I dont think Daves program applies to my carbs :-(

Im not really interested in getting every ounce of power out of the engine at the moment, I just need it to run and drive properly with decent emissions...once its on the road, then I might consider getting it tuned properly...

I suspect the jets are wrong, but it might be something else....

hmm.....arse!

used them for years, mainly for setting up the mixture through the rev range, simple to use and very effective.

Yup. I've also used them. Got it so close it passed SVA first time round without a hint of needle twidling... I took it to a RR after SVA and they said it was 99% there already. Infact they were tempted to leave it completely as is but in the end shimmed the needle on one set of carbs....

I fiddled around for ages trying to get my timing, jets etc set-up right (same engine/carb set-up BTW), but without the experience or proper tools you're working blind TBH.

In the end I took it to a local legend Tom Airey who relieved me of a similar sum that you have been quoted. Hand on heart it was the best money i've spent on the car. Using the RR he was able to tweek every last bit out of the engine and didn't take the money off me until I'd been out for a 1/2hr test run afterwards.

Drop me a U2U to remind me and I'll dig out the jet sizes I have fitted which should provide you with a good start point.

Still got my Colortune plug... its got to be 35 years old and still works well.

Its nothing new... just a window into the combustion chanber, so you can see the colour of the flame. Just like how they know if your gas boiler is choked with dust. By the color of the flame.

Simple, effective, and been around for donkeys years.

Tegwin,

Which RR have you asked? There are a couple in Cheltenham/Gloucester who do hourly rates...

MechRepairs
Raceshack
ThorRacing

Might be worth an ask! Let me know how you get on, 'cos I will need a setup too!

well all that is usefull and also if you have a laptop you can get an accelerometer to measure if you have had any gain in performance if you have a long straight road handy, you can tweak the ignition.
