Today seems quite appropriate.
'Cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey'.
Again a naval term. A 'monkey' was a brass plate with round indentations on it upon which the iron cannon balls were stacked in a pyramid.
Because of the differential in expansion / contraction rates of brass and iron, when it was really cold, the indentations were too small to hold the
cannon balls and so they rolled off the monkey.

All right, you asked for it!
An archer has a piece of leather called a tab that protects the fingers on the string-holding hand. If the archer has an arrow fitted to the string
and is ready to shoot an enemy, he's "keeping tabs on him".
When they made guns ages ago, each part was made by different craftsmen. When they were all assembled together the gun was complete - "lock,
stock and barrel".
The old flintlock guns had an intermediate hammer position half-way back where the user could safely fill the pan with gunpowder, see to the flint,
and so on. If the hammer fell from this point it was said to "go off half-cocked", before it was ready.
