Modify a car on a budget?

Would it be possible to get a cheap hatchback and modify it into a road legal hliiclimb/track day car with a budet of
£7-800?
The car would be used to get me to college (30 miles away) 3 days a week for about 2 years. The idea is for me to have something different from what the other chavs there will have.

Depends on your definition of a hillclimb/trackday car......... Buy the best hatchback you can for £800, strip out all the weight you can and bingo you've got a road legal car that would be eligible for hillclimbs and trackdays. I suspect that's not what you meant though

If you're talking about a modified car you're not going to get much in the way of modification done on that budget, just a decent roll cage (ie one that doesn't make the car more dangerous than it was before) will make an enormous dint in your £800!

Yes, only your competitiveness depends on the cash spent (and your driving talent obviously).

xr2 or Pug 205 would be favourite depending on class you want to drive in.

yes you can, i brought a MOT'ed fiesta Si of pistonheads.com, previous owner had fitted 2litre zetec, cosworth brakes, polly bushed, uprated suspension ect for £600 just needing a clutch, stripped it sold the recaro interior for £100! and now on road and does 1 trackday a month, handles like a dream too.

Cheers guys.
The closest iv ever got to any motorsport is when i get 1 litre fiesta's trying to outrun my jag at the lights.
I heard that hillclimbing is one of the best ways to get into motorsport.
I didnt know if i could get away with just stripping the interior or if there were any regulations to say you need a rollcage or any other safty equipment.
What would be the best car to use then?
I know i said no french cars a few weeks ago when i asked a similar Q but im open to anything now

dont need a roll cage in road class , something upto 1400cc , fiesta , metro GTi something like that .

£7-800 will become 4-500 after youve spent on overalls/helmet , some small consumables and your licence .

the best thing you can buy is some DECENT tyres .

OH OH Oh where can I get all this stuff for free and they give me back 300 quid towards my car
Yeh I know i'm a carcastic sunt

The fiesta / small car route will be yout best bet BUT if you get the competitive bug then costs will soar i'm afraid.

Forget about competing against others and just aim to beat your own personal bests each time - keeps the temptation to blow loads of money on expensive tuning down (for a while, anyway).

If you search well, and can find a half decet one, a Nova Sport (NOT GTE, GSi, SRi) would be ideal if you could find still in one piece. It's a 1300 on twin webbers with the most basic of trims - a bit like a 106 Rallye.

Well we started off with a budget of about £1200 to get the Pug sorted and ready to hillclimb.

I'm not even going to attempt to estimate what it's actually cost us, but probably near enough double that, and could have spent double again!

You really dont want to skimp when it comes to safety though.

mmmm ok possible chav alert but a saxo vts could be a fun option there are plenty of 106 gti's sprinting and hillclimbing and the saxo is same motor but a bit cheaper or as suggested 205 gti etc if you can find one a suzuki swift gti also alot of fun
