I looked long and hard at this.......

Pilgrim Sumo: Nice kit, good bodywork but you will always look at it as see it as a cheap copy. It just doesn't look right to me but for the price can't be beat!! Good quality gear.

DAX: Very nice but again it looks too long in the body. Chassis is prone to twisting under acceloration with American V8's. They do a decent suspension upgrade which is suposed to be the dogs!!

AK: Can't go wrong here!

GD: When you see the chassis you WILL do something in your pants!!!!! It's a work of art. Easy build as you buy the Tub with much work done and it is kind of custom made to your chassis with the doors hung so everything fits. THIS IS THE ONE I WOULD SPEND MY DOSH ON!

Don't care for the others! but you MUST have an American V8 in it or you will be ashamed when you drive it with other Cobra owners.

I'll have one one day!!

Some good info on here, but replies will be (naturally enough) very partisan

I'd have the GD if it was me, it's the way an engineer would do a Cobra

I read in one of the kit car mags a while back that the Crendon replica is the most authentic (same 4" tube chassis design etc.) of the replicas. Depends what you are looking for I guess.

Crendon Replicas

Hmm, thinking it was totalkitcar

Yes Crendon are the most authentic but you have to buy a rolling chassis i think which 1, is expensive, 2 half the build is done for you and 3, takes ages to get it once ordered as Crendon is a one man band. Bloody nice though!!!!

I looked at building one myself a few years back and as above it came down to the GD or the AK. The AK build cost seems a fair bit cheaper when i did all the sums and the guys at the factory in Peterborough were brilliant.

I guess you need to get across to GD and then hop onto the A1 down to AK to compare really. Can go around the block and look in the Radical factory while you are at AK too!!

I came so close to placing an order for an AK, then took a drive in it. GD is the only option for me, but I couldn't justify the £20k plus.

After speaking to loads of owners you really do need £20k plus, speak to Andy Burrows at GD and he'll tell you the same. There's only so much you can 'locost' !

I'd go for an LS injected engine over a Ford or Chevy, in a GD, much better fuel consumption and you can get them with a manual box.

A Chevy 350 or Ford 351 can be picked up for little money, converting to manual costs the money, but with 5.7litres it would suck down sub 20mpg, and with a heavy boot who knows, not ideal for a car that you would want to cover big miles with.

Ever thought of a BEC

Can't recommend a British kit cause I don't know them but :-

After driving my Cobra for about 20 years I still get a thrill each time I floor the accelerator - there are few cars that can start spinning the back tyres at 900 revs and keep them spinning to 5000+

Also - despite there being many in our area - you still get a lot of positive reaction wherever you go. I also wouldn't think twice about going on a 500 km trip in it at any time as it's very comfortable as long as you keep the speed below 110kph or else wind buffeting becomes unpleasant.

The down side is - and this is why I'm building a Locost - they aren't the greatest handlers in the world. The fuel bill is also on the heavy side - but hey - it's a toy not a commuter.

Another downside is that it's really difficult to find suitable performance tyres for them unless you go for 17" or bigger wheels. Then the tyres cost a small fortune.

Another downside - if you are not circumspect it bites like a snake.

But even after 20 years I will never sell my Cobra.

The only way to economise on a cobra in my opinion is to build it as a road racer. The purple wilton, cream leather, and chrome everything else interiors cost a huge amount of cash and just add weight.

Stripped out interior, no bumpers, engine clean but simple and maybe even painted steel wheels, is the way to go anyway IMO.

p.s. top attitude Ivan

The transmission tunnel and the resultant massive bottom to the dashboard ruin the GD one (IMHO of course!)
