any stage lighting (DMX) type people on here?

My mates band are looking to do another gig soon, and want to put on a proper show (the singer's pretty flamboyant... think 'the darkness'

they're looking to put on a bit of a light show too, yeah we could just go with some lights and switch them on manually and stuff, but we're looking at prices, and semi pro DMX controlled stuff's pretty decent on price now!

I've got a laser (not DMX) so that can be fired up onto the mirror ball the venue's already got. we can switch that on manually.
seen some LED par can's, with red green and blue leds (DMX controlled) for about £30 each, we're thinking of some smoke too run through a box of ice to make it float low on the ground. the reason for the DMX controll is we were thinking it would be good to change colours on the lights to match the mood of the song, and do some strobe effects too. i'm going to light the singer up pink... i think he'd like that, but he doesn't know this yet lol

now, as for a DMX controller. hardware or software?

we've seen a 16 channel harware mixer for £60 (the led par cans take 4 channels each apparently) or a 516 channel software controller also for £60.

i tend to trust hardware more, as its purpose built for the job, but softwares cheaper but may not have the response time etc

any pros on here got any tips?
