Electric truck
Do you think it'd be possible to build an electric truck/van (something around the size of a medium campervan) that had a range of about 30-40
miles? (locost style) I know there have been some electric kit cars, would it work on a bigger scale?
Would you take an existing vehicle and strip it down/modify? How many batteries would be needed and what kind of motor size?
just a mad idea i have...

Yes it would but it would cost you a small fortune on batteries alone!!!

Yeah look up any of the electric car forum and you'll see that the batterys for even a small car will cost thousands, as for a truck, horror
I'd not even like to guess. The battery life is also rubbish and since you need to replace all at the same time it ends up one huge hit on the
wallet.
I'd love an electric car but they are simply too expensive.

One guy on one of the forums has a Jester with £15,000 worth of batteries which gives hib 140-160 miles on a single charge.
A van with std but decent lead acid batteries would cost you a good 800+ quid and you would be lucky to get 40+ miles.

Don't take offence Whippy, but those words are too often the beliefs of the public.
I did a lot of R&D for an old fella, building electric cars. We got a prototype running, and it was about to go into production when he up and
died last year.
Lead/acid batteries are still the best value on energy stored per kg per £ spent. And they are improving. The six battery set for what we built cost
about £300 wholesale, with the batteries having a three year guarantee. Range was 100+ miles per charge, at a cost on Economy7 electric of about £1
today.
The local delivery van version was about to be built, and it had twelve batteries and four motors giving a range of about 100~120 miles and 56hp. Big
torque though, and constant.
So, as long as you don't want to drive faster than 50mph, an electric vehicle is a viable proposition.
I just may go ahead with my version of the developed car soon, then again, I might not. Depends on whether I can get some of the greedy bastard
investment bankers interested. Then walk away with a handful of readys and leave them to it.
Cheers,
Syd.

Sounds interesting, what sort of size/weight was the car? 2 seater?
