SVA Urgent...Handbrake problems

Have an SVA retest 2mo and I still dont think the handbrake is up to the job...

Its the standard sierra lever using disks and shortened one piece cable...

The rear brakes work, but the handbrake struggles to stop the car.....it just about holds on a hill..

What is the best way of improving its efficiency?....I cant for the life of me figure out why its so pants!!!

Any thoughts?...Im really desperate on this one!

I know you're not an idiot, but you gotta get the simple things out of the way first!

Is there any slack in any of the cables and/or links etc?

Can you see the brakes both being operated when the lever is pulled?

Are the rear brakes upto much on their own anyway?

Steve

Sticky pistons on the rear drums?

May be worth stripping down each side and just exercising them a bit....

Sound like slack cable and not adjusted properly.

Are the auto adjusters free may need to sort these out as you may have too much travel in the drum

Are they all new?? If all of the above dont work they might just need a good burn in.

Slaken off the cable and turn the adjusters on each caliper by hand until the pad just skims the disk.
Refit the calipers and pump the brake pedal hard 4 or 5 times.

Retension the cable so the hanbrakes bites at about 40 to 50% of its travel, spin each rear wheel to check the brake isn't bind when off.

More likely the cable is over tensioned ---

Hi, I had exactly the same problem with my Phoenix running the same set-up. I'm quite sure there is nothing wrong and that the handbrake will improve once the pads have bedded in.

You only need to adjust the cable once and from then on it will be self-adjusting by some heavy applications of the brake pedal.

I was worried that it would not pass SVA but it went through without any comment.

I hope this will put your mind at rest.

Best of luck for SVA

Apply it slightly and run the car to bed them in, they only have to be something like 20% of total brake effort to pass and that isn't a lot

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Legal requirement is the handbrake must have 16% efficiency, to put it another way be you should able to stop the car on the hand brake alone at a deceleration of 0.16g.

which car did you get the hand brake from?

I think they are different between the sierra discs and sierra drums - the hand brake cable connection is closer to the pivot on teh sierra disc hand brake lever.

Well that was amusing...

Failed...

The handbrake must achieve at least 18%.... We managed 12 although the tester was not pulling very hard..

I drove some of the way back and gave the handbrake some abuse and it is getting slightly better...

Im sure the lever came from a drum braked car...so perhaps moving the pivot point would be a good idea!

Worth a try for the next round of abuse!
