Which is easily the fairest and most sensible system. If there was 1p extra duty purely to cover the loss of road tax, my annual tax bill would be roughly the same as it is now (1300 Yaris, roughly 10,000 miles/year). My Locost would be massively less despite it's thirsty ways (due to me only doing around 1500 miles/year), and my wife's Matiz would be halved (she does around 2,000 miles/year).

Anyone who chooses to drive a big and thirsty car will pay more - which is what this government (spit!) claim to be trying to achieve.

I think it would be an incentive for the manufacturers to get the mpg down as well.

The trouble with the french fuel is that it is on sale in France, and one has to go there to buy it. By the time one had got home most or all of it would be used up.

The simple fact is that England, with all its faults, is still a nicer place than anywhere else.

Certainly isn't 'nicer' than Vancouver in Canada...

I spent 3 weeks in Detroit once. England is better than there. I've been to Hong Kong too. Very clean. Excelent public transport. The people are very polite. Housing is terrible, traffic worse. Rather live in England. South Africa has great food. The best steak in the world by far. Nice place. Rather live in England. Ireland wasn't bad, nor Canada either. Still England.

Many of the people here are antisocial, violent and rude. We have appaling litter but no-one cares. Politicians are shocking and the tabloid press are worse. On balance, I'd still rather live here than anywhere I've been. Just because I don't want to live anywhere else, doesn't meen I can't see the faults our society has.

The whole point about being English is that you don't need to do experiments to find out where the best place to live is, you already know!

God's English too

But surely Stafford is in England? If you don't like it, why are you still here?

And if the G'ment did scrap RFL and put it on fuel think of the HUGE savings at DVLA.

- No staff, buildings or computers to administer the system

- No printing & postage sending out reminders & issuing tax discs.

- No camera vans to check on who's paying.

Like the council tax & child tax credit they just seem to make things more complicated than they were and then have to waste more money to run them.

I used to be apathetic but now I just don't care.

Fuel in France is now about the same as here diesels cheaper but since they got rid of road tax the price of it has rocketed.

Very nice to cherry pick certain items and say thier less than here but we have no motorway tolls as Italy, spain and France, cant speak for Germany but take it from me if hauliers were paying the same as in these countries they would be moaning.
Cheers,
Bob
