Protecting shiny bodywork whilst working in the garage?

The classic TVR I bought had just had a very expensive and good respray done on it...

Sadly they had not bothered to do any of the internal/engine jobs before the repaint, so I am having to strip out the interior/suspension etc to restore said items..

What is the easiest way of protecting the bodywork so it does not get accidentally scratched or chipped?....The bodywork is the best bit of the car...would be a shame to see it ruined

How about a good polish, then buy one of those indoor car covers, put it on the car, cut out the shape of the engine bay etc. and masking tape the edges to the inside edges of the engina bay, door openings etc.

Would ruin a good cover, but cheaper than a respray, you can put extra padding over high risk areas, wing tops etc.

Why not get some old blankets or bedsheets and carefully masking tape these in place. They are not very abrasive and would stop the kind of glancing blow that cause damage. Charity shops actually throw these kinds of things away as they don't sell. If you popped in and made a donation to their cause I'm sure they'd keep a couple of bags for you...

What about bubble wrap cut and "wrapped" round each panel?

Edit to add the other possibility is that flexy "foam type sheet" that is usually used to wrap tvs etc in their boxes

Hi,

I used bubble wrap taped into place, and even with my hamfisted tendancies didnt damage any panel.

Regards

Bob

Are there any vinyl/graphics places near you ? I use the `backing` stuff they put on stick-on graphics - its a heavy duty translucent film , fairly thick and tough , but easy to remove and wont damage the paint

Its cuz I is blond , innit

Don't use old blankets/dust sheets as they are bound to have bit's of crap in them that will damage the car - I went out and bought a couple of new dust sheets.

I wouldn't use bubble wrap. It won't let the car breath and the GRP may not like getting steamed.....

I'd use dust sheets or new cheap blankets.

Well I've used them for years without any problem. I didn't use shitty old dust sheets that have been coated in crap obviously.
