Tin Top Problem

My Dad has a 51 plate 1.7 diesel Corsa with a turbo. Problem is that when accelerating it holds back badly before bursting forward at around 2500 rpm and leaves a plume of black smoke behind.
I replaced the Air Flow Meter some time ago and that solved the problem for a short time but it returned.
Weekend before last Dad was driving to Whitby and the engine check light came on when it did it seemed to cure the fault! When he got to Whitby, he parked the car up all day and when setting off back the engine check light was out again and the hesitation had gone.
Any ideas?

Mmmm our transit van is doing the same, dealer says it's the EGR valve it's been in twice and the problem persists.

If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.

I would suspect a sensor reading problem - could be reason why it is running better is it has started ignoring the sensors readings and is running on fall back settings.

First stage is to get the fault codes read --- not sure if this model is fully EOBD compatible (only a european requirement for diesels from 2003 onwards).

It could be the MAF but recent Vauxhall diesels have a reputation for block cats usually gives fault code P1125
= Boost Pressure Solenoid Valve Voltage High

Very interesting suggestions. The car isn't fully EOBD compliant.
Been thinking the EGR ourselves but I was also thinking along the lines of one of the sensors like you Trident.
I'll look into both cheers fellas.

Had the exact same problem on a ford focus 1.8 Tddi. Turned out to be a blocked cat....

Is it a case of replacing the CAT then or can it be unblocked?

What or where is this boost pressure solenoid then? I've had a quick flick through the Haynes manual and there's nowt obvious. Does it have another name?

Did you replace the MAF with a genuine OEM part? The cheap chinese knock-offs (as sold on everyones favourite auction site) have terrible reliability. Then again the Bosch ones aren't exactly great.

Can't remember now to be honest. I know that the Bosch ones are cack from having owned an Alfa. They were a particular problem there especially on the 3.0 V6.
