a mate of mine has a 2003 seat ibiza with a snapped timing belt/chain - how much to fix?

eyup

A friend of mine has just asked me how much it will be to get the timing belt/chain fixed on his engine... I told him I'm not entirely sure but that I'd check on here.

If the engine timing needs resetting, would that affect the cost massively? If not, is it as simple as fitting a new belt and that's that?

Thanks in advance

belt snapped

resetting the timing is the simple bit which as you say will need doing before the belt is fitted but the bad news is depending on the engine type, you have a 99% possiblity that the pistons have meet the valves and are bent so the cly head will need to come off and valves replaced then rebuilt with a new belt fitted.not cheep.Depends on the engine type...no of valves etc.

If engine was running on that engine some valves would have been bent, I guess 500 quid
at a local friendly garage would be reasonable

thanks for the offer tom but I'm working away in reading at the mo & friends car is at his house in west yorkshire... He messaged me on facebook asking quickly how expensive it would be to sort out, so I told him about the pistons & valves issue just to give him a rough idea of how big a job it is...

I'll try get in touch with him and get the details to you. I know it's a 54 reg 1.4 seat ibiza basic model type...
