Old Unregistered Cars and V5's!
Just bought a 1968 MGBGT. It's been sat in a barn for years and has no V5. Do I just get in touch with DVLA with the chassis / engine number
to get a new one? Also, is it age related (i.e. will it still be Tax-exempt)?

You need to fill in a V62 and pay £25.
Fill in a SORN at the same time to avoid potential problems.

You get the original reg back assuming it hasn't officially been scrapped - don't know what happens then...

You should get the original registration number unless it has since been allocated to another car, in which case they should issue an age related
plate. As IanK says - fill out the form and send your cheque along with a new SORN declaration. Hopefully DVLA will just accept it.
Has it been on SORN previously? Did you get a receipt with the car just in case??

do you have the reg number? on old tax disks, mots, bills etc
then you could either do a dvla vehicle check or an RAC data check and pull up its history, I used that for the Falcon

You should not have a problem with SORN even if you claim the V5.
I did this with my Austin 7 Special and they just returned the SORN application I sent with the V62.
Basically no need to SORN as the car was not taxed when SORN was introduced.

It becomes a problem when you get the V5 changed to your name, as you need to SORN when it changes hands even if it's been off the road before
the rule changes. At least that's what I understand to be how the system works. Better to waste 30 seconds filling in the form and removing
all risk of a fine IMO.

that's basically what someone at the DVLA told me when I got my scimitar (it had a V5 and has been off the road since 1984  ) they actually
said it was at the discretion of the person who processed it ! so I SORN'd it at the same time to be safe
but when I tried to renew the SORN it I was told I couldn't because it was already off the road when SORN's started - so the only way I
can SORN it is to tax it first
from my experience it appears that this new database thing (that lets you tax / sorn online) is what stops you declaring a car SORN if it was already
off the road
so its best to check - but the answer you get seems to depend on who you speak to 
but if the computer tells them it doesn't need a SORN then they are happy

I was also changing vehicle ownership at the time - but as you say you might as well send them the SORN form anyway just to be on the safe side.

Hoorah! Good news indeed! No road tax for my new toy (which will take ages to get anywhere near road-ready as it's a complete rust-bucket!).

When I got the V5C through for the Sylva, I SORNed immediately.
Haven't heard a cheep since and that is coming up for two years now.

In my case, I was the first owner who actually had the car correctly registered.
Wouldn't have been good to go straight to a fine for no tax disc.
