i have a couple of questions for you guys
are the local scrap yard owners absolute d*cks where you are?
do they let you look around the yard for bits that you need, like edis stuff or engines etc?
do they try and rip you off if you want stuff?

Mixture around south Suffolk - many won't even let you on their site any more, but one or two are still the traditional "take it off
yourself, and bring it back to the desk" type.

mine tries to rip me off. you'll ask him for something, even taking the old one in to compare, he'll try and sell you everything and
anything else. even when the bit you actually want is right in front of you...

Yep! T1ts. You have to tell them what you want and they'll point you down to a greasy corner. After you've struggled for 45 minutes to
remove what you want they tell you they want an extortionate fee for it! I always ask up front how much they want and they get a bit grumbly but there
seems to be a £10 minimum for anything.
I give up on them now and stick with Ebay or here TBH.

One place can be a bit stand-offish if I turn up in ordinary casual clothes, but one day I couldn't be bothered to change after working on the
car so turned up in overalls and pockets full of screwdrivers and spanners. He pointed me at the target car and let me get on with it, uninterrupted!
Hardly charged me for the parts afterwards (Matiz screen-wash pump for a couple of Pounds).

Won't let you look around - health and safety issue.
Charge astronomical prices - £125.00 for a pair of Cortina hubs, rusted solid.
£15 for a plug off and old wiring loom.
They are not a 'scrap yard', accorning to their sign, they are a Vehicle Re-cycling Station.
OOOO Missus.  
Tell them about the bent treacle edges!

they vary near me the best 1 if found took the parts off for me and charged a fair amount
I may be biased though as they had a 3.3 diff (result)

I must be lucky in gloucestershire then my local scrappy has 200 odd cars ,walk round and take off what you like,and dirt cheap sierra diffs 25 notes
each drive shafts a tenner nothings overpriced, and if its not working or the wrong part just take it back for a full refund.

Hi, bournemouth has a good one.
Either off the shelf or a take it off yourself area, £1 entry (to stop timewasters) anda pricelist of £x for a part no mater what car and quite
reasonable at that.

Yes (last time I used my local scrappy they wanted £3 less than the main dealer for a light unit, oh and I'd have to take it off the car myself)

My local scrappy is either very helpful and reasonably priced or a moody tw4t that charges more then the new price!!
I popped in the other day for an O2 sensor (to check against the new one I had bought that I was certain was broken. It was BTW.) He wanted £45 plus
vat!! I got a new one from the local factors for £23. I couple of months ago, I got five brand new(ish) tyres on rims for £40 and a new looking Bosch
battery for £5.
The next closest yard is a three day camel ride away.

The scrapyard is in cheltenham ,the name of the yard is harry bucklands,well worth a look ,luck of the draw whats there changes week to week.

I went into the local one sbout 4 years ago before they knew me. I was after wheel studs from a granada for my tina uprights. I took a piece of ali
to knock the studs out with and they tried to charge me for taking the bit of ali from his yard
makes all the difference if you turn up filthy greasy and swearing like a docker

Another vote for Harry Bucklands. Very good.
My local (1 mile away) is small, but they do let you wander around for what you want. If they overprice a part, put it down and walk out - by the time
you have removed it, they would rather sell it than leave it....

i allways go covered in muck and in my old rusty 93 astra estate. never once have i paid over the odds and i normally haggle all the small bits in
with a deal.
the other trick i use. i know how much i want to pay for something before i go so only take that amount of cash.
i go down the yard get the bit i want go to the desk and ask how much.
if they want less money than i took with me then i win.
if they want more money than i took then i get what i have out and say this is all i have on me and 99% of the time they fold on the spot take what
money i have, thinking they have cleared me out.
sometimes you have to play your cards and say nevermind ill leave it and start to walk off before they fold but its pretty much flawless. but never
go back with more money later i allways go somewhere else as they will learn you are soft and wont budge in the future.

The very best one is Spalls, Dallinghoo, Woodbridge, Suffolk IP13 0LA - this is the place that let you do it yourself. (used to a few months ago -
don't know their current state) - easy trip for you!
Bit of a b**ger to find though!
Second-best is Whip St Autos (or Motors) in Ipswich - this is the one in town, not their place in an old quarry. Limited choice, but they do let you
wander around (this is the place where I turned up in overalls...)

I find they are all different around here, there are quite a few too.
One of my favourites I have been frequenting for some time now and know the bloke quite well, although I don't get any discounts (it's a
business you know), I do get to wonder around. Most of the others need to know what you want first.
Also on the subject, we lost one of our scrappy's last Friday ..

They'll let you rummage around for hours on end taking bits off of 'any car without wheels on', and then charge pennies.
Example: Fiesta ECU and wiring loom £20.
Box full of pipes, expansion bottle, relays, fuses, all sorts of other bits and a radiator - £15 the lot.
Bargain.

surely be difficult if they are messed about.

complete f*********ing a*********les and d*********s
the jap car scrappy will not let you walk amidst the precarioulsy stacked cars to look for bits so no use if you are a kit car builder as sometimes
you don't know what car you need to look at.
The other place has sign "minium charge £ 5, if you don;t want to pay that then f**k off". Which is bloody damn rude if you ask
me.
ebay is the e way.

there was one near us that wanted me to pay £15 for a vacuum capsule from a dizzy from a nissan micra. Only wanted to pay a couple of quid as they
fail easily so was about to say oh well will put it back then when he took it off me and threw it into the depths of his yard!
So he threw away what i wanted and now there was a car with a non working dizzy i his yard.
On the other hand there is a good one in widnes they always charge reasonable prices and are not d*cks.
Is a shame most of the stuff in there is too new. The oldest stuff is mk3 astras etc which what my work van is so is useful for spares for that.
