Sony PSP as a video player

Can anyone tell me if these are any good at playing video files via a memory stick. Thinking of getting one for the holidays.
Brad.

I thought i could get a really good memory stick ,say 8 gig and put some of my daughters DVD's on it, then that would keep her occupied during the traveling. Then some good racing games for me.

Think about getting an Ipod touch. better software for loading videos on, free games and it's a lot less bulky. TBH the games on the psp are crap.

it is slightly bigger (4.3" vs 3.5" but i think the screen is alot better on the ipod plus the unit itself is way smaller than the psp, battery life is better too.

Only issue perhaps with the Ipod touch (not sure the PSP) is you have to transcode videos to play on it. I've got some freeware conversion program that does it but it keeps the desktop burning and churning for a little while (6-8 hours per hour) whilst it's doing it.

Love the Ipod touch video action though. Very portable, good screen etc etc. Watched the Timewatch Pyramid program on it off BBC iplayer last night (DRM- what's that )....

PSP works fine. Done this myself. Don't forget that I believe the newer ones have "TV Out" so you can plug it in at the relatives and watch it on the telly (yes, I know iPods can do this but they're seriously hampered by the iTunes lockin IMHO)

To put files onto it, you want either the Sony Media Software for it (search - it's a free download from, I think, Sony Japan) or something like Handbrake - not as flexible perhaps as Super but far more useable.

Hi

For the PSP you can get movies from torrent files and if necessary convert them to MP4 using PSP video 9. Average size is 650-700k per movie. So 4g is more than adequate. The only downside to the PSP is the volume is too low. It may be possible to boost the volume with a conversion program, but i have not tried that yet.

HTH

I find the iPod screen amazing quality. There's other posts on here about converting video to run on on it easily. Can't remember what mines called but it runs at about real time
