Helmet or no helmet?
Given Massa's close encounter with a bit of debris set me thinking about what to wear when driving.
Normally if it's local I just go for a baseball cap relying on my specs for eye protection, the 4" flyscreen taking most of the bugs and
crap.
Longer runs and it's full face helmet, ear plugs etc.
So what's the general opinion on face/eye protection?
BTW riding bikes I'd never contemplate anything other than full face even on a tiddler.

PS General conclusion seems to be "helmets on".
Also just noticed this was raised in a post on Tues under the "DRIVING" heading "Has Massa made you think twice?".

that is what I do.
Anything on 70mph roads or anything that might be called "testing" needs a helmet.
But I am a newbie to it all.

Local slower roads = goggles.
Longer trips, faster roads = helmet.
I rarely do near half what Massa was travelling at so would like to think i could duck in time. If its a big missile then probs not much you can do
anyway.
More chance of falling off a bike so it would have to be helmet every time.

Helmet, there's all sorts of cr*p on the roads. Think about the noise a bit of gravel makes hitting your windscreen then consider the noise you
would make if that same bit of gravel had smacked you in the nose!

just been on a 200 mile run on my bike and got hit no less than 3 times on the visor by what I assume were bumble bee's, sounded more like
stones tbh
get one of those in the eye's and you'd most likely crash

I was wearing a helmet more and more as it was. Even more so now!
You're just daft if you take risks with your eyesight!
I've seen the mark a stone left in someone's forehead when hit with a stone. I know fo someone having a tooth knocked out.
Friend of mine's Dad lost an eye with just a small stone from a lawn mover! Won't be hard for something at 30-40mph to blind you!
We're so much lower in cars than on a bike too... so gravel is that much more likely.

When i was new to bikes, i had a GSXR 600, and on the sunday blats wasalways catching up the R1's etc.
Anyway, one day, i was bombing along a back road in kent, at around 80-90 (kph of course!  ) and a pheasant flew out of the bushes and straight into
my helmet.
It nearly took my head off, and was enough force to jar my neck, and force me to stop.
If i hadnt had a full face helmet, i would have had an early lunch, with bits of teeth to swallow etc.
Even though you may only be going 30mph, a lorry coming the other way is enough to throw something up at a combined 60mph+ which will sting somewhat
if it hits you in the head.
Id wear a full face helmet every time if i had a fly screen. A windscreen will deflect most things, but a spring like Massa's accident, wont be
stopped by too much.

Full face helmet every time.
You get little protection in a Se7en.
DONT take chances with your eyes, you only get one pair.
There is too much debris on the roads to take the risk.
Consider the insurance claim.... You were not taking adequate precautions to protect yourself. Hence its more than possible to see a reduced
payout.
They will do anything to avoid paying out!.
Just dont leave it to chance.
1. The point of a journey is not to arrive.
2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

simular thing has always been questioned on a motorbike, t-shirt and jeans or leathers, but having seen the gravel rash caused by falling off at 30mph
its leathers for me. so it would have to be helmet for me, but can understand appeal of goggles for short slow driving, if only for the heat, but if
so must be propper impact resistant ones

Helmet every time. Bees and gravel are bad enough, think what happens when a truck drops a bolt...
I've always worn a helmet when cycling too, and it paid off after a fall trying to follow a mad South African girl down a downhill section ended
up with me going head first into the end of a felled tree. Helmet shattered into four pieces, I was fine other than cuts bruises etc.
I used to not wear a helmet snowboarding either, until a friend (a beginner) caught a slow speed heelside edge and went head backwards onto hard snow,
and ended up with severe concussion and amnesia for a week. Went and bought a lid the same day.

even a fly at low speed could take the sight from an eye.

has anyone thought about how strong the mounts are holding on your windscreen.
mine bolts to the scuttle which is fiberglass, a small bird hitting that will take it straight off.

i always wear a helmet when i drive. i would not even consider driving without it unless i had a full screen!
