Petrol engine oil in a diesel engine
Hi all.
my diesel smoke needs an oil change. I've been told by a friend that i can use petrol engine oil in it, its free oil so i want to. Does anyone
know if this will harm the engine? its a high miler tdi, the oil is 10w-30.
thanks in advance, Joel.

Diesel oil usually has a higher detergent content to cope with the higher amounts of carbon that it has to deal with, other than that I can't
see a problem if you change the oil more often. As long as it's an oil that can cope with the higher temperatures that come with a turbo go for
it, what's the worst that can happen (boom!)?
It's all slippy innit?

as it stands, its 40k since its last service! with a turbo, it wont be having fun with the current oil. so im thinking anything is better than what it
has. The lad who gets the oil says he's been running his mondeo td on it a while, no ill effects, i just thought id put it to the panel!
cheers tblue. filter tommorow, then down to the messy work...

If it's done 40k since it's last dance with virgin golden I think it's more likely to seize with shock rather than using 10w-30 than
15w-40. I run three motors (VW Transporter 2.4 N/A diesel, Volvo 940 2 litre turbo, and a Mk 1 Escort 1300 all steel crossflow to 9000rpm) and they
all use a different oil in theory, but in between services they all get a top up from whatever is left in the shed. A lot of oil science is BBB, but
saying that don't be putting non of that 0w-30 in your A-series now.
