OT - SWOT analyasis for job interview?

I have a 2nd interview coming up next week for a new job. As well as having to provide a business plan and a 10 min presentation to the Sales Director I have been asked to carry out and report on a SWOT analysis of myself.

I have to admit to having to Google it to find out what a SWOT analysis is, but I think I have a reasonable understanding of what's involved.

Has anyone else had to do one on themselves or asked someone else to do one for a job?

Are there any good guides/templates people can recommend?

Any common pitfalls etc?

All help will be very gratefully received!

Cheers
Nick

Strengths
Weaknesses
Opportunity’s
Threats

Just thought I would say in case google came up with the wrong answer for you. Usually we complete this for the business rather than as an individual. Personally I wouldn't use a template other than those four headings and then bullet point your thoughts below. Not sure what you are supposed to put as threats on a personal basis 'swine flu'

I'd tell them what they want to hear. That you are damn good!
As for weaknesses can you put what they would regard as a strength as a weak ess? For example say your friends regArd you as highly competative and you are working on being less so in your social life. That way you slip in another strength.
Opportunities are whatever they are offering. Check out their mission statement and crib from it.
Threats - don't say the recession cos we all have to deal with it and it affects competitors equally, could your other interviewees be the specific threat? Is your age a threat - ie you have to achieve before a certain age to succeed - also hammers home your drive in a negative section.
So to summarise turn the weaknesses and threats into strengths and opportunities - this is really taking the outcomes from a swot into the analysis but you are pushed for tome at an interview. 30 seconds each or you will bore but have backup for questions
Good luck

You'd be surprised how quickly the sales people at B&Q try and assist you after ignoring you for the past 15 minutes when you try and start a chainsaw

Are you sure he didn't want you to perform a SWOT analysis of the company to check your knowledge and research? It doesn't make much sense on an individual basis, apart from strengths/weaknesses which is more like a self appraisal.

I think V8 kid has some good advice. Never say anything negative on a CV or in a interview. So for weaknesses I would say something like 'impatience' or perhaps 'overly organised' or 'standards are to high'. It makes me laugh when people say on CVs 'I like drinking wiv my mates' etc. So then I think 'coming to work with hangovers then'.

Congratulations!

On a slightly selfless note, might be worth jotting a quick note down on what you put just in case someone searches or someone directs someone to your post as a future reference...

I've been unemployed for over 2 months now, and if It were asked of me in an interview, I'd refer to this site due to the number of "professional" people on here...

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Congratulations! I think that the job market is pretty tough these days. I also often think employers don't realise how important getting a job is to some people. Not replying to CV's and not getting back to people after a interview is terrible. Well done again.

More than happy to share what I did for the interview, but need to accept the offer first and get it all signed and sealed. I also have to deal with resigning from my current employer of 14 years which went into adminstration this week and didn't pay last months wages. Half the staff were made redundant immediately and told to claim stat redundancy, the rest of us were left in limbo supposedly being paid by the administrators going forward. No idea what will happen so it seems I've timed things about right!

@ Steve and Blake - I hope things pick-up for you both. It wasn't easy even getting interviews and even tougher selling myself on the few that I got.
