They were lucky ... Old two stoke diesels are notorious for running out of control when they start to run on their own crankcase oil breaching the rings. Without the injector pump governor controlling revs they will spin faster and faster until they destroy themselves.

The only way to stop them is to stuff wet rags into the air intake. If you don't know this just run in the opposite direction.

I have a 5 cylinder 27 litre two stroke diesel in one of my boats. I always keep a bucket or water and rags handy.

A place I worked in the 70s ran a 2 stroke Foden lorry and the engine on that used to scream, you could hear it from a mile away.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

The Foden used a Commer TS3 two stroke horizontally opposed diesel. The screaming sound is from the supercharger scavenge pump.

I did a short course at Lister in Dursley many years ago and they took us for a look about round the factory. When we were at the test cells they told us about an engine that ran away on it's own sump oil. A quick thinking technician grabbed a phone directory and placed it on the air intake to stall the engine. The engine promptly sucked the book straight in and didn't even cough!

I wouldn't get too close with those wet rags if I was you!

And that is a large propane cylinder it's kicking around as well. I'm just glad the sump never landed on the valve....
